The bald eagle is an iconic symbol of the United States. It is known for being an impressive predator and water bird that feeds on a variety of coastal and freshwater fish, including salmon and trout. Today, bald eagles are protected and their populations are stable, but they were not always in such good shape. In the early to mid-1900s, bald eagles were heavily hunted and victim to significant accidental poisoning by the common pesticide DDT.
By 1972, the bald eagle was critically endangered and afforded protection by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Today, the bald eagle is one of the ESA's greatest success stories, with some populations even increasing! The ESA works. Don't let Congress strip away this legislation for anti-environment interest groups. Go to OCEANA.ORG/TAKE-ACTION to save the ESA from extinction.
