As the monsoon intensifies across Kodagu district, a 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has arrived to assist with precautionary and emergency preparedness measures.

The Rapid Response Team from the 10th Battalion, headquartered in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, is currently stationed at the Cooperative Department Training Institute near the Muthappa Temple in Madikeri.

Led by Inspector Rambhaj, the team has already held discussions with the District Administration to identify vulnerable zones prone to landslides, floods, and road blockages.

While 30 personnel have been deployed initially, officials said additional reinforcements will be mobilised if required. The unit will remain in Kodagu through June, until monsoon conditions ease.

The team has brought along a wide range of rescue equipment, including signal units, satellite phones, life jackets, motorboats, rafts, chainsaws, ropes, searchlights, hydraulic cutters for collapsed structures, oxygen cylinders, stretchers, generators and essential life-saving medicines.

The personnel are trained to handle floods, landslides and other natural disasters, with a focus on both human and livestock rescue.

For the first time, the team includes a trained rescue dog named ‘Honey’, an eight-year-old German Shepherd.

‘Honey’ has been specially trained to detect trapped persons under debris by sensing heartbeats and smell.

Accompanied by two handlers, the dog is expected to play a key role in search-and-rescue operations and will serve until 2027, as per service norms

Hearing the goat’s sound, the tigress entered the cage for the hunt and got trapped.

On receiving information, the forest department sleuths along with Nagarahole Tiger Reserve Veterinarian Dr. Ramesh arrived at the spot and tranquillised the tigress before shifting it to another cage.

According to forest sleuths, the tigress has been shifted to a safer location for medical examination.

The officials are also waiting for the instructions from higher officers for further action.

The tourist car that slipped into the Kabini backwaters near Udbur on June 8 was retrieved the same night with the help of a crane.

The vehicle, which had been parked on a sloping embankment, rolled into the water, triggering concern among onlookers. The driver had not engaged the handbrakes.

With water levels in Kabini currently low, the backwaters have become a popular spot for family outings. However, locals have raised concerns over irresponsible behaviour by some visitors, including alleged consumption of alcohol and littering of plastic waste along the riverbank.

Residents have urged authorities to take steps to regulate such activities and ensure visitor safety.

Sub-Inspector Chandrashekar said Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information. “There was no one inside the car, so no mishap occurred. The submerged vehicle was retrieved using a crane. A case has been registered,” he confirmed.

Forest officials radio-collared a male elephant in Konanakatte village of Kodagu, bordering the Thithimathi–Anechowkur range of the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve.

The elephant, believed to be the leader of the herd, was captured as part of a monitoring exercise following recent human–elephant conflict incidents in the region. Notably, one elephant from the same herd had earlier killed the wife of a retired IPS officer inside her coffee estate.

The operation was carried out by a specialised veterinary and wildlife capture team led by veterinarian Dr. Ramesh, with assistance from six trained kumki elephants.

After the target elephant was identified, it was tranquillised using a dart fired from a safe distance, with the dosage carefully calculated based on its age and estimated weight. Once the animal was immobilised, Dr. Ramesh and his team approached and fitted a GPS-enabled radio collar worth around Rs. 30 lakh around its neck.

The collar will now transmit real-time location data to forest control rooms, enabling officials to track the elephant’s movement, map migration routes, and take preventive steps to reduce human–elephant conflict.

After the procedure was completed, an antidote was administered to revive the animal, following which the team withdrew, allowing the elephant to recover and rejoin its herd naturally.

A major Forest Department operation is in progress near Konanakatte village on the Thithimathi-Anechowkur border of the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve after a wild elephant fatally attacked Sandhya, the wife of retired IPS officer and former IGP Sunil Achayya, in a coffee estate.

More than 100 forest personnel have been deployed for the mission. The operation is being assisted by six trained kumki elephants from the Mattigodu camp - Bhima, Abhimanyu, Mahendra, Ganesh, Ekalavya and Srikanta.

Forest officials have radio-collared a male tusker believed to be the leader of the herd. Authorities hope tracking its movements will help locate and isolate the elephant responsible for the fatal attack.

According to Mathigodu (Anechowkur) Range Assistant Conservator of Forests Narayan Lakshmikanth, the herd consists of four elephants - one female and three tuskers. The radio-collared tusker, despite being blind in one eye, is the herd leader.

Forest officials say they have identified the elephant involved in the attack and are using a combination of ground tracking, drone surveillance and kumki elephant support to monitor the herd's movements.

Interestingly, the herd leader became separated from the group during the darting and radio-collaring operation, adding another challenge to the ongoing search.

Each radio collar used in the operation costs around Rs. 30 lakh. Before entering the forest, customary pujas were performed for the kumki elephants, following long-standing tradition.

Drones are now being used alongside ground teams as the Forest Department intensifies efforts to ensure public safety and prevent further human-elephant conflict in the region.

Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) officials seen working late into night on June 4.

Star of Mysore checks the activity at 11.30 pm.

All sections of MDA office were operational, with lights on across corridors.

Seeing cameras, staff members and middlemen left the premises hurriedly.

Some officials moved quickly with files, making notes, and working with urgency.

Vehicles belonging to senior officers were seen parked outside MDA office.

However, designation nameplates in front of vehicles were removed.

They were and kept inside the vehicles, adding to the intrigue.
The next day, June 5, none of the officials came to office even at 10.45 am.

Most chambers were vacant despite strict biometric attendance system.

What work is being carried out at night that cannot be done during the day?

Why is it being done after office hours? That too at midnight?
How are individuals other than officials being allowed into the inner sections of MDA?

What is the purpose of deploying security personnel if middlemen can gain free access?

A wild tusker died after getting trapped in slush at Thonduru village in Kushalnagar taluk of Kodagu district on June 4.

According to reports, the approximately 25-year-old male elephant, while attempting to free itself, came into contact with a solar fence. The resulting electric shock is believed to have been fatal, leading to its death.

Forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. Veterinarians carried out a post-mortem examination to ascertain further details.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety risks posed by solar fencing in elephant habitats and the continuing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
