India’s unemployment crisis is far deeper than what official numbers suggest. While the government’s PLFS 2025 data claims the unemployment rate is just 3.1%, CMIE’s June 2024 estimate puts it at 9.2%, translating to nearly 14.9 crore unemployed people. The situation is worst among the youth, where unemployment in the 15–24 age group has reached 45.4%, meaning almost one in every two young people is jobless. Even graduates are struggling the most, with a 17.3% unemployment rate, proving that degrees no longer guarantee jobs. Between 2014 and 2022, over 22 crore applications were submitted for central government jobs, but only 7.22 lakh recruitments took place.
