PRESS NOTE

AISBA Condemns Disrespectful Tattoo Depiction of Buddhist Deities тАУ Demands Public Apology and Removal of the Tattoo.
The All India Sherpa Buddhist Association (AISBA) expresses deep concern and strong objection over the recent incident at the International Tattoo Convention held on 9-12 October, 2025 at Saramsa Garden, Gangtok, Sikkim where sacred images of Buddhist deities were tattooed below the waist.
Such depictions of sacred Buddhist figures in an inappropriate manner are deeply hurtful and disrespectful to the spiritual and cultural sentiments of the Buddhist community. Portraying holy deities in such a manner demonstrates a serious lack of cultural and religious sensitivity.
The AISBA demands that the event organisers and the tattoo artist involved must:
1. Publicly erase the tattoo of Buddhist deities from the individualтАЩs lower body part.
2. Issue a formal public apology acknowledging the hurt caused to the Buddhist community.
3. Ensure that such acts of cultural and religious insensitivity are not repeated in future events.
While the Association respects freedom of artistic expression, it emphasizes that creativity should never cross the boundaries of religious respect and cultural harmony. Sacred symbols and deities are objects of reverence and must not be used for artistic or commercial purposes that degrade their sanctity.
The AISBA appeals to all artists, event organisers and creative communities to act with awareness and sensitivity towards all religions, thereby maintaining peace and respect among diverse faiths and traditions.
