Canada has developed a groundbreaking biodegradable battery made entirely from tree pulp, offering a clean alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Unlike conventional batteries that contribute to electronic waste and contain toxic heavy metals, this innovation is designed to fully dissolve in soil without leaving harmful residues.
The battery works by converting cellulose from wood pulp into conductive material capable of storing and releasing energy. While its energy capacity is currently lower than commercial batteries, it could be perfect for short-term applications such as medical sensors, wearable devices, or temporary electronics. More importantly, it sets the stage for a future where energy storage does not harm the environment.
With electronic waste becoming a major global problem, biodegradable batteries could drastically reduce pollution and resource depletion. This innovation proves that sustainability and technology can go hand in hand, paving the way for cleaner energy storage solutions.

Today, Shri Karma Gyamtso Bhutia, SSP Namchi District, conducted a sensitisation-cum-interaction programme with local stakeholders, including jewellery shop owners, mainline and local taxi driver associations, mobile shop owners, scrap dealers, and garage owners of Namchi District. Around 200 stakeholders participated. The programme was also attended by ASP Namchi, SDPOs, and SHOs.

The following issues were deliberated:
1. Shop owners were sensitised on their role in prevention and detection of theft and burglary cases. They were instructed not to accept any articles without valid documents. In case of doubtful articles, sellers must be asked to produce an NOC from the concerned SHO/SDPO. They were urged to promptly inform the local PS regarding suspected stolen property and were also apprised of legal implications of dealing in unverified articles.
2. Taxi associations (local and mainline) were advised to inform police if any passenger is found carrying suspected stolen property, drugs, or controlled substances. They were also urged to report immediately if a minor is found travelling alone or with a suspicious person, to prevent child trafficking.

All stakeholders were provided with the SSP Namchi’s helpline number ( 9046245044) for sharing information.

The programme aimed at strengthening police-public relations and fostering collective efforts towards a drug-free and crime-free society. The stakeholders appreciated the initiative and assured full cooperation with the police in this mission.
