the Building Bharat Sampark Innovation Boot Camp in Civil Engineering,

📘 Engineering Insight: Isolated Column Footings — A Practical Guide for Diploma Engineers

Topic: Understanding Isolated Column Footings and how to decide steel direction & footing size.

When planning rooms and column layouts, architects prefer isolated columns spaced 3.5 m to 4.5 m apart.
👉 Closely placed columns may require combined or trapezoidal footings, especially under unsymmetrical loads (e.g., 750 kN & 1000 kN).

🧱 Design Guidelines:

Keep footing proportions similar to the column ratio.
For example: if column = 300 × 600 mm, footing L:B ≈ 1:2.

To determine steel direction, note the larger offset from column center to footing edge.
Example: Footing = 1.80 × 1.60 m → offsets = 0.90 m & 0.80 m.
👉 Bottom reinforcement should be placed along the longer offset (0.90 m), as the bending moment is higher in that direction.

To simplify design, using a square footing helps avoid confusion about steel direction.

Always ensure upward soil pressure ≤ Ultimate Bearing Capacity (UBC).
Generally, UBC = 2.5 × SBC.
If SBC = 100 kN/m² → UBC = 250 kN/m².
If pressure exceeds this, increase footing area to stay safe.
