Sheetal Devi Shatters Barriers, Secures Spot in India’s Able-Bodied Asia Cup Archery Team

The 18-year-old from Jammu and Kashmir qualified for India’s able-bodied junior team for the Asia Cup Stage 3 in Jeddah.

She came third in tough national trials in Sonipat, scoring 703 points—matching the top scorer. Over 60 able-bodied archers competed, and Sheetal beat most to join the squad.

“I dreamed of shooting alongside able-bodied archers. Today, I’m one step closer,” she shared online.

Sheetal, who won Paralympic bronze in 2024, trains in Katra and is the world’s first armless female archery champion.

CM Omar Abdullah visited the cloudburst-affected areas of Kishtwar today and met affected families. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and damage and said the Government stands firmly with the people in this hour of grief.

As a mark of solidarity and immediate succor, Chief Minister announced ex-gratia relief from the CM’s Relief Fund:

• ₹2 lakh for each deceased.
• ₹1 lakh for severely injured, ₹50,000 for minor injuries.
• ₹1 lakh for fully damaged structures.
• ₹50,000 for severely damaged structures.
•₹25,000 for partially damaged structures.

Instructions were also issued for immediate restoration of the affected infrastructure in the area.

Jammu and Kashmir minister Satish Sharma on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announce restoration of statehood to the Union Territory during his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort.
Sharma was responding to questions from reporters about the Supreme Court on Thursday giving the Centre eight weeks to file a response on a plea seeking the restoration of statehood to J-K.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on August 14, is a reminder of people’s enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold the country together.
On this day, India remembers the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that “tragic chapter of our history”, Modi said in reference to the unspeakable suffering as millions were forced to leave their homes. Lakhs of people are estimated to have died in communal violence.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a meeting to review the master plans for the twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu, alongside the Unified Building Bye-Laws (UBBL) for Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Commissioner Secretary Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) Mandeep Kaur, Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, Deputy Commissioners of Srinagar and Jammu, Commissioners of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Jammu Municipal Corporation, Vice Chairpersons of Srinagar and Jammu Development Authorities, and other senior officials concerned.
The meeting held detailed deliberations on the Srinagar Master Plan-2035, Jammu Master Plan-2032, and the Unified Building Bye-Laws-2021. Commissioner Secretary H&UDD gave comprehensive presentation on the master plans, highlighting their strategic vision, projected urban growth patterns, infrastructure requirements and policy interventions.
The Unified Building Bye-Laws were also discussed, particularly those related to permissible land use for residential, industrial, public and semi-public spaces, as well as other technical provisions aimed at streamlining urban development.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasised that master plans must be realistic, implementable and reflect ground realities, rather than existing solely as vision documents.

He directed that the plans should take into consideration views of all stakeholders and it should be environmentally sustainable and capable of addressing future urban challenges while preserving the cultural and ecological identity of both cities.
“These master plans must shape the future growth of our two major cities for decades. It is vital that they are not just visionary, but also practical in ex*****on, ensuring tangible benefits for citizens,” the Chief Minister said.
He also directed all concerned departments to incorporate on-ground assessments, public feedback and inter-departmental coordination to ensure the successful implementation of the plans.
