New Study Reveals How Fans Project Their Political Beliefs onto Heroes and Villains

People think that Harry Potter, Spiderman and Gandalf would vote the same way they do, whereas Darth Vader, Cruella de Vill and Joffrey Baratheon would vote for the rival party.

New research from the University of Southampton, published today [17 March] in the journal Political Science Research & Method, shows how people in the UK and USA believe that fictional characters they admire would share their voting preferences, while those they dislike would vote the other way.

The researchers also found that around one in six people recalled the party affiliation of a charitable or corrupt politician in a news story, despite it not being revealed. Again, people thought the ‘good’ politician was from their party, while the ‘bad’ one was from the party they oppose.

Researchers say this political projection could be fuelling polarisation in politics.

“If we see ‘villains’ as belonging to the other side, then we also tend to associate more and more negative attributes with that group,” says Dr Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte, lead of the study from the University of Southampton. “This is not only bad news for polarisation, but also makes us more easily susceptible to misinformation that confirms the existing biases we hold about the voters of certain parties.”

The Arctic’s Unicorn: Captivating Footage of the Majestic Narwhal

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, working alongside Inuit communities in Nunavut, have captured the first evidence of narwhals using their iconic tusks in the wild. Using drone technology, the team observed narwhals investigating, manipulating, and even influencing the behavior of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), sometimes delivering enough force with their tusks to stun — and potentially kill — the fish. World Speech Day: How Virtual Reality is Revolutionizing Public Speaking Training

Today marks World Speech Day, a day encouraging us to embrace public speaking opportunities. However, this call may not be widely answered, as most people struggle with speech anxiety and the fear of speaking in front of others. The good news is that a free and highly effective solution is now available.

At Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, researchers are using emerging digital technology to enrich and accelerate learning. Their Immersive Technology Lab received a national innovation award for a project that uses VR to better translate and visualise emissions data. Today, they are launching a free online platform where users transform into skilled and confident public speakers. On the platform, tailored course material develops key skills and life-like virtual reality training environments build confidence.

Lab Director and platform founder, Dr Chris Macdonald, explains, “In physical reality, a user might be practising a presentation alone in their bedroom but on the new virtual reality platform, they can experience the sensation of presenting to a wide range of increasingly challenging photorealistic audiences.”
