दिल्ली: श्री राम कॉलेज ऑफ़ कॉमर्स (SRCC) के शताब्दी समारोह में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने कहा, "एक ऐसा गिरोह है जो मेरी बातों को तोड़-मरोड़कर मेरे ही खाते में डाल देगा। इसलिए, मैं आपको इसके बारे में पहले ही आगाह कर देता हूँ। मैं आपको बताता हूँ कि 2013 के उस दौर में मीडिया में क्या छाया रहता था। उदाहरण के लिए, LoC पर भारतीय सैनिक मारे जा रहे थे। आज की पीढ़ी को यह सुनकर हैरानी हो सकती है; शायद वे सोचें, "क्या सच में ऐसा हुआ था?" हाँ, ऐसा हुआ था। वर्ल्ड बैंक ने GDP ग्रोथ का अनुमान घटा दिया था। करंट अकाउंट डेफिसिट (चालू खाता घाटा) अपने सबसे ऊँचे स्तर पर था। महंगाई लगभग 10 प्रतिशत थी। इंडस्ट्रियल सेक्टर मंदी की चपेट में था। हेलिकॉप्टर डील में भ्रष्टाचार का मामला सामने आया था। हैदराबाद में बम धमाके हुए थे। उस समय ये सभी खबरें सुर्खियों में थीं। मेरा पक्का मानना है कि आज के छात्रों को शायद इन सब बातों के बारे में पता न हो। ये घटनाएँ दिखाती हैं कि उस समय देश के हालात क्या थे। ग्रोथ सबसे निचले स्तर पर थी, जबकि महंगाई चरम पर थी। घोटाले अपने चरम पर थे और भ्रष्ट लोग बेखौफ घूम रहे थे। अर्थव्यवस्था मुश्किल दौर से गुज़र रही थी। हर तरफ 'पॉलिसी पैरालिसिस' (नीतिगत गतिरोध) की चर्चा थी। दुनिया भारत को "फ्रैजाइल फाइव" (कमज़ोर पाँच अर्थव्यवस्थाओं) में गिन रही थी। आतंकवादी बेरोकटोक अपनी गतिविधियाँ चला रहे थे और पाकिस्तान बेकाबू हो गया था। दूसरे शब्दों में कहें तो, निराशा और मायूसी के अलावा कुछ नहीं था। एक समय ऐसा था जब देश हर मोर्चे पर संघर्ष कर रहा था..."

Scams were at their height, and the corrupt were moving around fearlessly. The economy was in distress. There was discussion everywhere about policy paralysis. The world was counting India among the "Fragile Five." Terrorists were operating unchecked, and Pakistan was out of control. In other words, there was nothing but disappointment and despair. There was a time when the country was struggling on every front..."
