A private jet skidded off the runway and crashed into bushes at the Mohammadabad airstrip on Thursday, officials said. All passengers and the two pilots escaped unhurt.

According to district officials, the jet, belonging to Jet Service Aviation Pvt Ltd and bearing registration number VT-DEZ, lost control while taking off and veered off the runway into shrubs around 10.30 am.

The jet was carrying the managing director of a beer factory under construction in the district's industrial area, who had arrived to inspect the project site, they said.

Following the incident, the sub-divisional magistrate rushed to the spot.

District Magistrate Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi said, "The private jet carrying the MD of an under-construction factory lost control during takeoff and went into nearby bushes. Fortunately, all occupants are safe, and no injuries have been reported."

PTI INFOGRAPHICS | Pope Leo addresses global news agency executives at the Vatican

Addressing global news agency executives, Pope Leo underscored the critical need for a free and objective press, calling free access to information a "pillar that upholds the edifice of our society." He urged news agencies to "never sell out your authority" and appealed for the release of journalists who are unjustly imprisoned for doing their job.

Key highlights from his address.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said age restrictions under the 2021 surrogacy law will not apply to intending couples who commenced the procedure, like freezing of embryos, before the Act came into force on January 25, 2022.

The apex court said that age restriction won't apply if the intending couple was at the stage of creation of embryos and freezing after extraction of gametes and on the threshold of transfer of embryos to the uterus of the surrogate mother prior to the commencement of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.

The Act set age limits for intending couples and surrogate mothers.

According to the law, the intended mother must be between 23 and 50 years of age, and the intended father must be aged between 26 and 55 on the day of certification.

A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and K V Viswanathan delivered the verdict on pleas filed by three couples.

"...if an intending couple had commenced the surrogacy procedure prior to the commencement of the Act, that is, January 25, 2022, and were at the stage of creation of embryos and freezing after extraction of gametes... and on the threshold of transfer of embryos to the uterus of the surrogate mother, in that case, the age restriction would not apply," the bench said while pronouncing the order.

It said the age bar will not apply retrospectively.

The bench said before January 25, 2022, there were no binding laws regarding age restrictions on intending couples wishing to avail surrogacy.

"Therefore, for couples above the statutory age limits under the Act, the right to access surrogacy or their entitlement to surrogacy was not conditional on their age and was freely available to the couples under the prevailing law," the bench said.

It clarified that the court was not questioning the wisdom of Parliament in its prescription of age limits under the Act or passing a judgement on its validity.

"Rather, the cases before us are limited to couples who commenced the surrogacy process before the enforcement of the Act, and we limit our observations to the same," the bench said.

The world needs free, rigorous and objective journalism; otherwise, people will be unable to distinguish between "fact and fiction" and "true and false", as in totalitarian rules, Pope Leo said on Thursday.

He said free access to information is a pillar that upholds the edifice of our societies. "For this reason we are called to defend it (freedom of the press) and guarantee it," he said.

In an address to invited executives of global news agencies at the Vatican, the Pope said journalism should be "freed from unfair competition and from the degrading practice of so-called clickbait," he said. PTI executives were among those present.

He added that news agencies are at the frontlines of protecting the "right to accurate and balanced information".

Pope Leo is a strong proponent of free press, and immediately after being chosen for the position, he had met journalists from around the world to appeal for the release of imprisoned journalists.

The Pope said the communications sector "cannot" and "must not" separate its work from sharing the truth, as he urged news agencies to "never sell out your authority".

Underlining the media's crucial role in forming consciences and helping critical thinking, he said it is a "paradox that in the age of communication, news and media agencies are undergoing a period of crisis."

"Similarly, those who consume information are also in crisis, often mistaking the false for the true and the authentic for the artificial. Yet, no one today can say, 'I did not know'," he said.

Pope Leo, the first American to occupy the throne of St Peter, also called for vigilance to ensure that technology does not replace humans, pointing out that Artificial Intelligence is changing the way information is received.

"Algorithms generate content and data at a scale and speed never seen before. But who controls them? Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we receive information and communicate, but who directs it and for what purposes?"

"We must be vigilant in order to ensure that technology does not replace human beings and that the information and algorithms that govern it today are not in the hands of a few," he said.

Jharkhand witnessed one of its most intense monsoons in a decade this year, leaving behind a trail of destruction across the state.

Between June and September, heavy rainfall and associated disasters claimed at least 458 lives, damaged thousands of homes, and ravaged farmlands, official data showed.

According to figures compiled from various state departments, 186 people were killed by lightning strikes, while 178 drowned in rain-related incidents. Floods, landslides, and house collapses accounted for the remaining casualties.

The deluge completely destroyed 467 houses and partially damaged over 8,000, while crops across 2,390 hectares were lost, particularly in the Ranchi, Gumla, Lohardaga, and Simdega districts.

In Sahibganj alone, rising water levels of the Ganga displaced around 20,000 people.

"This year, Jharkhand recorded 1,199.5 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 30, which is 18 per cent above normal," Ranchi Meteorological Centre's Director Abhishek Anand told PTI.

"It is the highest rainfall the state has seen in the past decade. The last comparable figure was 1,101.8 mm in 2016," he said.

Anand attributed the record rainfall to climate change and increased sea surface temperatures in the Bay of Bengal, which led to frequent low-pressure formations drifting toward Jharkhand.

"The Bay of Bengal remained unusually active this season, causing repeated heavy downpours across eastern and southeastern districts," he said.

Among districts, East Singhbhum topped the list with 1,669.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Saraikela-Kharsawan (1,526.3 mm) and Ranchi (1,550.2 mm), each recording more than 50 per cent of normal rainfall.

The IMD predicted a "pink cold", or mild winter, around Diwali and Chhath Puja, followed by potentially intense cold later in the season.

"The severity of winter will depend on global factors like La Nina, changes in wind patterns, and snowfall in the Himalayan region," Anand explained.

While rainfall activity has now begun to decline, the IMD has forecast isolated moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some areas until October 12, after which dry conditions are expected to prevail as the monsoon withdraws.

India and the UK are natural partners, and the partnership between the two countries is becoming a crucial foundation for global stability and economic progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.

After wide-ranging talks with visiting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Modi said the foundation of the India-UK relationship is a shared belief in values such as democracy, freedom, and rule of law.

In the joint briefing after the talks, Starmer said the India-UK relationship is special.

"We are creating a new modern partnership focusing on the future," he said, while hailing India's growth story as remarkable.

Prime Minister Modi also said that India and the UK have reached an agreement on cooperation in military training.

"We are fully committed to enhancing maritime security cooperation with the UK in the Indo-Pacific region," PM Modi said.

On the Ukraine conflict and Gaza issue, he said India supports all efforts to restore peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

The two leaders held talks broadly focusing on boosting the India-UK ties in areas of trade, defence and security and critical technology.

The British leader, accompanied by a delegation of 125 of the UK's most prominent business leaders, entrepreneurs and educationists, landed in Mumbai on Wednesday morning on a two-day visit.

Starmer's visit to India came two and a half months after the two countries inked a landmark free trade pact that will increase market access, cut tariffs and is expected to result in doubling the bilateral trade by 2030.

The trade deal was firmed up during PM Modi's visit to London in July.

The recent flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in north Bengal have caused massive destruction in at least 30-35 tea gardens in Darjeeling, with reports of loss of plantation areas, deaths of workers and damage to houses of labourers, prompting planters to convene a meeting to assess the situation, stakeholders said.

Darjeeling tea planters are now collecting data related to damage from the gardens and will discuss various issues during a proposed meeting on Thursday, they said.

Tea bushes in many gardens have been washed away, while the loss of tea-bearing land has left permanent damage to several estates, planters said.

SS Bagaria, chairman of the Bagaria Group, which owns three gardens in Darjeeling, told PTI that the industry's overall loss due to heavy rain and landslides in the hills could be at least Rs 50 crore.

"Heavy rain and landslides have severely hit tea gardens in the hills, with reports of loss of lives and extensive damage to property. There was no work or electricity for two to three days. However, power supply was restored on Wednesday. At least 50 per cent of 71 operational gardens in Darjeeling are severely affected," industry veteran and Chamong Tea chairman Ashok Lohia told PTI.

At least 32 people, including children, were killed as relentless rain triggered one of the worst landslides in a decade in the Darjeeling hills and adjoining areas on Sunday, sweeping away homes, cutting off roads, isolating villages, and leaving hundreds of stranded tourists amid widespread devastation, officials said.

With disruption in production and logistics challenges, the quantity of Darjeeling tea to be offered for auction at the Kolkata Tea Auction centre is expected to be low, and this could jack up the prices for the aromatic variety.

According to an official of the Calcutta Tea Traders Association, around 1.15 lakh kg of Darjeeling tea have been catalogued for the sale numbers 42 and 43, which are scheduled to be held on October 14 and 24, respectively, but the quantity to be offered for the sale number 44 and onwards is likely to be "lower".
