Uttarkashi Cloudburst: A Tragic Loss and Urgent Call for Help
On August 5, 2025, a devastating cloudburst struck Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, triggering catastrophic flash floods and landslides along the Kheer Ganga river. The disaster has claimed at least four lives, with over 50 people reported missing, many feared trapped under debris. Homes, hotels, shops, and critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges, have been swept away, leaving the village in ruins. The disaster has also impacted an Indian Army camp, with 8-10 soldiers and one officer missing.
The scale of destruction has disrupted the local tourism-based economy, with 20-25 hotels and homestays obliterated, and the Gangotri Dham pilgrimage route cut off. Rescue operations involving the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and ITBP are underway, but blocked roads and ongoing heavy rainfall are hampering efforts.
The recurring nature of such disasters in Uttarkashi, worsened by climate change and unsustainable development, underscores the urgent need for immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation to support affected families and rebuild their lives.
