JKNPF President Jasif Khan Raises Concern Over Health Hazards Caused by Russian Poplar Fluff in Kashmir
Srinagar, May 9: President of the Jammu & Kashmir Nationalist People’s Front, Jasif Khan, has expressed serious concern over the growing health risks caused by the widespread spread of Russian poplar fluff across various parts of Kashmir.
In a statement issued today, Jasif Khan said that the seasonal spread of Russian poplar fluff has become a major environmental and public health issue, causing discomfort and respiratory complications among residents, especially during the peak allergy season.
Russian poplar fluff spreading across Kashmir is becoming a serious health concern, triggering allergies and breathing problems among residents,” said Jasif Khan.
He stated that hospitals and healthcare centres in Srinagar and other districts are witnessing a rise in cases related to allergic reactions, asthma, throat infections, and breathing difficulties linked to airborne poplar fluff.
The JKNPF President expressed concern over the impact on vulnerable sections of society, particularly children, elderly citizens, and patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. He noted that many families are being forced to remain indoors to avoid exposure to the fluff.
Jasif Khan further said that despite repeated public concerns and previous discussions regarding the management of Russian poplar trees, the issue continues to affect daily life across the Valley every year.
He urged the divisional administration and the Health Department to take immediate preventive and mitigation measures, including regular cleaning drives in public areas, monitoring of pollution levels, and issuing public health advisories to help citizens protect themselves during the allergy season.
The JKNPF also appealed to the authorities to formulate a long-term environmental management strategy to address the recurring problem and safeguard public health.
