Gulmarg Gondola Rides Surge as Vande Bharat Express Boosts Kashmir Tourism in 2026

Kashmir’s iconic tourist destinations, particularly Gulmarg, are witnessing a sharp rise in visitors this summer, largely aided by the new 20-coach Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar.
The semi-high-speed train, flagged off on April 30, 2026, by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has more than doubled capacity from the earlier 8-coach version. It covers the 300+ km distance in under 5 hours, providing comfortable, all-weather connectivity and attracting large numbers of domestic tourists.
Official data shows over 4.23 lakh tourists visited Kashmir in the first four months of 2026. Gulmarg has emerged as a major hotspot, with the Gulmarg Gondola — one of Asia’s highest cable car rides — attracting nearly 5,000 riders daily. The Gondola operates in two phases: Phase 1 from Gulmarg (2,650m) to Kongdoori (3,050m) and Phase 2 up to Apharwat Peak (3,979m), offering stunning views of snow-capped mountains and meadows.
Current ticket prices are approximately ₹810 for Phase 1 and ₹1,010 for Phase 2 (round trip). Hotels, markets, and local businesses in Gulmarg are bustling with activity.
Officials credit the Vande Bharat Express for driving this growth, making Kashmir more accessible and boosting tourism significantly.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari: Vande Bharat Boosts Pilgrimage to Ancient Shankaracharya Temple

With Indian Railways strengthening connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir, devotees from Kerala have begun visiting the historic Shankaracharya Temple, symbolising the growing rail link between Kashmir and Kanyakumari. The introduction of the 20-coach Vande Bharat Express between Jammu and Srinagar has significantly improved access to the Kashmir Valley, boosting tourism and religious travel.

The ancient temple, also known as Jyeshteshwara Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located atop the Zabarwan Range, nearly 1,000 feet above Srinagar city. Considered the oldest surviving temple in Kashmir, the shrine is believed to date back more than 2,500 years. Historical references by chronicler Kalhana mention that King Gopaditya built the temple around 371 BCE as a shrine to Jyesthesvara.

The temple is also deeply associated with Adi Shankara, who is believed by Hindus to have visited the shrine, after which the hill and temple came to be known as Shankaracharya. It is widely believed that Adi Shankara composed the spiritual text Saundarya Lahari here, reflecting the philosophy of Shiva-Shakti union and the symbolism of the Sri Yantra. The temple today stands as a major spiritual and cultural landmark in Kashmir, attracting devotees from across India.

Inside New Vande Bharat: Railway Staff Hail Historic Jammu–Kashmir Rail Journey Through Tunnels

Sangaldan: Travelling inside the newly launched Vande Bharat Express on the Jammu–Srinagar route offers a glimpse of one of India’s most ambitious railway achievements. As the train moved through the tunnel section before Sangaldan station, railway staff onboard described the project as a matter of pride and a symbol of India’s engineering strength.

Train Manager Rampal Sharma, who is responsible for overseeing the entire train and assisting passengers during emergencies or medical needs, said the role acts as a vital link between railway administration and the moving train.

Through Long Mountain Tunnels

The Vande Bharat passed through Tunnel 44, a nearly 10-kilometre-long tunnel located before Sangaldan station. The tunnel is one of several major underground stretches on the Jammu–Srinagar rail corridor.

Officials said the route between Jammu and Srinagar includes 55 tunnels, many of them stretching beyond five kilometres, with some among the longest railway tunnels in India. Escape tunnels and modern safety systems have also been built to ensure passenger security.

Railway staff said the infrastructure has been designed to withstand earthquakes, heavy rain, snowfall, fog, and difficult weather conditions, allowing year-round train services.

Sangaldan Station: Built in Difficult Terrain

Railway officials noted that Sangaldan station itself is a remarkable engineering feat, constructed in mountainous terrain where space is limited. Engineers had to carve out land from steep hillsides to build platforms and track infrastructure.

Much of the 111-kilometre Katra–Banihal section passes through tunnels because of the difficult topography.

Indian Railways Now Allows Ticket Cancellation from Any Station

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a major reform in the ticket cancellation and refund process to make it more passenger-friendly.
Passengers can now cancel their tickets from any railway counter across the country, removing the earlier restriction of cancelling only at the terminating station. This facility is especially useful for the remaining 12% of tickets booked offline.
Additionally, the cumbersome Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) requirement for e-tickets has been completely eliminated. Refunds will now be processed automatically upon cancellation.
The Minister also highlighted that online cancellations are already being refunded within 24 hours — a reform introduced in 2023.
These changes are expected to bring significant convenience to passengers, even though they result in some revenue loss for Railways.
