Scientists Discover Key Switch to Turn Fat into Calorie-Burning Cells

A team at UC San Francisco has uncovered a surprising way to reprogram the body’s fat, a finding that could reshape the future of obesity treatment.

Our bodies mostly store energy as white fat—the type that builds up in the belly and hips. In contrast, beige and brown fat act like natural furnaces, burning calories to generate heat. For years, researchers believed converting white fat into its calorie-burning counterpart required rare stem cells and complicated interventions.

But UCSF scientists have now found a shortcut. In mice, disabling a single protein called KLF-15 was enough to trigger ordinary white fat cells to morph into beige fat. The process runs through a receptor named Adrb1, which now stands out as a promising target for future weight-loss therapies.

Why is this important? Earlier attempts tried activating a related receptor, Adrb3. While effective in mice, it caused side effects in humans—like nausea—because it also affected the brain. Targeting Adrb1 may avoid this problem by acting directly on fat cells.

If the same mechanism works in people, treatments could one day “flip the switch” in our fat, turning storage tissue into calorie-burning tissue. Such therapies would offer a safer, more precise way to fight obesity and related diseases—providing real hope for millions worldwide.
