रामायण-काल में यह जनपद बहुत प्रसिद्ध था तथा सीता के पिता जनक का राज्य इसी प्रदेश में था। मिथिला जनकपुर को भी कहते थे। अहिल्याश्रम मिथिला के सन्निकट स्थित था। वाल्मीकि रामायण के अनुसार मिथिला के राज्यवंश का संस्थापक निमि था।
