The Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board (APBB), Itanagar, celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026 on 22ndMay 2026 at the Dr.Verrier Elwin Conference Hall, State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Chimpu, under the global theme โActing Locally for Global Impact.โ
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Jaya Kumari, Intern, National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
Delivering the keynote address, Shri H.B. Abo, IFS, Member Secretary, APBB, highlighted the significance of observing the International Day for Biological Diversity and emphasized the importance of local actions in achieving global conservation goals. He spoke about the rich biological heritage of Arunachal Pradesh, the relevance of indigenous conservation practices, and the implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, particularly through the preparation of Peopleโs Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) and the sustainable use of biological resources. He also appreciated the active participation of students and youth in biodiversity conservation initiatives.
Shri Devendra Dalai, Addl. PCCF (WP&IT), Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, in his address highlighted Arunachal Pradeshโs importance as part of one of the worldโs most significant biodiversity hotspots. He encouraged citizens to contribute towards biodiversity conservation through simple and sustainable actions in their daily lives, emphasizing that collective local efforts can create a meaningful global impact.
The technical session featured presentations by Dr.Paromita Ghosh, Centre Head, G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment,Itanagar andProf. (Dr.) Hui Tag, Rajiv Gandhi University. Dr. Ghosh spoke on the global biodiversity crisis, climate change, sustainable use of biological resources, and Indiaโs biodiversity conservation initiatives, while emphasizing the role of youth and community participation. Prof.Hui Tag highlighted global biodiversity governance, the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP-17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the rich biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh. He also stressed the importance of biodiversity documentation, community-based conservation, and the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
The programme also included the distribution of prizes to winners of various competitions such as painting, model making, craftand short film makingcontests organized to promote biodiversity awareness among students, youth and the Biodiversity Management Committees.
Addressing the gathering, Shri HawaBagang, Chairman, APBB, reiterated the Boardโs commitment to strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts across the State. He highlighted initiatives for strengthening Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), exploring funding support for conservation programmes, and encouraging greater participation of students and local communities in biodiversity-related activities and research.
More than 70 participants including Scientists, Senior forest officials and staffs from State Forest Research Institute, Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board, Biodiversity Management Committees, stakeholders, teachers and students from various schools attended the programme.
Earlier, as part of celebration and creating awareness, the state biodiversity board also conducted various events like painting, model making competitions, short film making and craft making competitions for students and Biodiversity Management Committees and also conducted plantation programme in several schoolsorganized to promote biodiversity awareness. The winners of these events were also awarded during the day long programme.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Bamin Yakang, Research Officer, APBB. She concluded with the message that every small action for nature counts and that by acting locally, we can create a lasting global impact
