A devastating flash flood struck Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River region on August 26, after an ice-rock/glacial collapse unleashed a massive torrent of water, mud and debris through the Himalayan valleys. Entire settlements were hit, while roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and vital infrastructure were destroyed. The disaster has now claimed nearly 400 lives, with more than 1,400 people reported missing across Nepal and Tibet. Among those unaccounted for are hundreds of foreign nationals, including Indians. Rescue teams are working through thick layers of mud and debris, using helicopters, security personnel and search dogs to locate survivors. But destroyed roads and bridges have left several affected areas extremely difficult to reach. The danger is not over yet. Blocked rivers and newly formed lakes are raising fears of another flash flood, forcing authorities to closely monitor water levels and vulnerable areas. For families still waiting for news of their loved ones, the search continues—with hope that more survivors can be brought home safely.
