Due to heavy rains and flash floods in Nepal, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali districts of Bihar are at highest risk of floods and are on high alert.

The six most vulnerable districts are West Champaran (Bettiah/Valmiki Nagar), East Champaran (Motihari), Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali.

Other sensitive districts: Sitamarhi and Shivhar are also being continuously monitored by the administration.

The devastating flood threat in Bihar originates directly from a catastrophic chain of events in the high-altitude Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet, which quickly converts into a downstream crisis in the flat plains of North Bihar.

In view of the rising water level of Gandak and Kosi rivers in these areas, NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed and people from low-lying areas are being evacuated to safer places.

The ongoing flood crisis along the Bihar-Nepal border has triggered significant destruction. While the upstream glacial collapse and massive deluge caused catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure within Nepal and Tibet, the downstream impact in North Bihar is primarily manifesting as extensive agricultural destruction, village displacement, and severe infrastructure strain

A major ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a cascading hazard: a large glacier mass collapsed from high elevation, sending ice, rock and sediment into the Lhende Khola. The debris blocked the river and formed a temporary barrier lake, which then released a powerful downstream surge of muddy water, debris and boulders.

Possible factors: glacier instability, melting

ice, steep crevassed terrain, meltwater lubrication and possible seismic triggering.
