IMPORTANT INDICATIONS of FIBROPTIC BRONCHOSCOPY (FOB):
1. Evaluation of PERSISTENT or UNEXPLAINED COUGH –
when routine tests fail to identify the cause.
2. HEMOPTYSIS (coughing up blood)
to localize the bleeding site and identify the cause.
3. SUSPECTED LUNG CANCER –
for direct visualization, biopsy, and cytology.
4. PULMONARY INFECTIONS – diagnosis of tuberculosis, fungal infections, pneumonia (especially in immunocompromised patients).
5. INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASES (ILDs) –
for bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial lung biopsy.
6. AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION –
evaluation of stridor, wheeze, or suspected foreign body aspiration.
7. Non-resolving lung infiltrates – when chest X-ray or CT shows unresolved pneumonia or collapse.
8. MEDIASTINAL LYMPHADENOPATHY –
through transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA).
9. PRE-OPERATIVE AIRWAY ASSESSMENT –
before thoracic or lung surgery.
10. THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES –
suction of secretions, removal of mucus plugs, stent placement, or laser therapy.
