The United Nations has formally declared a famine in the Gaza Strip.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, is the world's top authority on hunger. It now says famine is occurring in Gaza City, affecting about half a million Palestinians who could starve to death, and warned that the crisis could spread south to other remaining urban centers soon.
Famine is the fifth and most severe level of food insecurity in the IPC's classification scale. Most of the rest of the Gaza Strip is already at the third or fourth stage.
The IPC declaration follows 22 months of near-constant Israeli bombardment, along with the repeated, forced displacement of Palestinians, severe restrictions on access to food, water and medicine, and the collapse of health, sanitation and market systems.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday he would restart indirect negotiations with Hamas aimed at returning the remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza. But Netanyahu said he would not halt Israel's military campaign to seize Gaza City while forcibly displacing its nearly one million inhabitants.
