Virasat Talk-183 | Exploring Kinnara-Kinnari Representations in the Visual Narratives of Early Indian Art (2nd Century BCE- 6th Century CE)

About the talk:
Indian art demonstrates a rich canvas of the entire visual world. It is not simply the representation of the visual reality but also the manifestation of the imaginative world impulsed by diverse strands of metaphysical and aesthetic expressions. This is explicitly showcased in the mythical or hybrid variety of figural forms. In the hybrid category the depiction of Kinnara-Kinnari forms an interesting genre and is an oft repeated subject in the fabric of visual art. In this session an attempt has been made to survey the various representations of the Kinnara-Kinnari in the early Indian art from the 2nd century BCE to 6th century CE and investigate its iconographic and stylistic specificities.

The Kinnara(male) and Kinnaris(female counterpart) are considered as the celestial musicians characterized by a hybrid physiognomy of half man half horse or half man half bird. They are engaged in the service of Kubera. The Indian literary tradition (Buddhist, Jaina and Brahmanical) have ample references to the Kinnara-Kinnaris, besides art historical documentations.

In Indian art there are some fascinating representations of Kinnara-Kinnari in iconoclastic and pictorial art tradition. This amazing variety undoubtedly evokes wonder and appreciation for such figures.
