Manmohan Singh, A prominent Indian economist and politician who served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, passed away on the 26th of December, 2024 at the age of 92 in New Delhi.

He was celebrated for his pivotal role in liberalizing India’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister in 1991, which set the stage for significant economic growth. Singh’s leadership saw India achieve an average growth rate of 7.7%, transforming it into one of the world’s largest economies.

Known for his integrity and academic rigor, he was a respected figure in Indian politics and economics.

Meanwhile, former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba M***i who also attended the oath taking ceremony. Terming it an “auspicious day”, M***i said that the people of J&K have an elected government after several years and expressed the hope that the new government would “heal these wounds” of the people of J&K.

As the UT government can have only 9 ministers, including the CM, Omar was expected to allot one Cabinet berth for the grand old party.

Congress Legislative Party leader GA Mir said it a little better, , “The Centre had promised statehood as part of a three-step process – delimitation, then elections and statehood. Now elections are also over and there is no reason left for the Centre not to restore statehood to J&K. We will join the government whenever that is done.”

Dressed in a black sherwani and sporting his signature sozni cap, Omar took oath at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), named after the title designated to his grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

After the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019, SKICC was designated a subsidiary jail where members of J&K’s political leadership were held for months.

Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, according to police there. He was 31.

In a statement, the police said they were called to the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighborhood where they were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”

Payne had previously been vocal about struggling with alcoholism, posting a video in July 2023 to his YouTube channel where he said he had been sober for six months after receiving treatment.

Liam was a member of One Direction, a band, which consisted of Payne, Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik and went on to become one of the biggest boybands of all time.

They have sold more than 70m records worldwide, with songs like What Makes You Beautiful, Night Changes and Steal My Girl.

This is a developing story and we’ll learn more about it over the course of the next few days.

“We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials.” The Indian foreign ministry said.

Canadian police said they had taken the unusual step of publicly disclosing information about the ongoing investigation “due to significant threat to public safety in our country”.

RCMP commissioner Mike Duheme told reporters at a news conference on Monday that there had been “over a dozen credible and imminent threats to life” which he said “specifically” focussed on members of the pro-Khalistan movement.

He added that the threats were sufficiently serious to warrant the RCMP’s public intervention.

“We reached a point where we felt it was imperative to confront the government of India.”

Officials said a dozen Indian agents were involved in the alleged criminal activities, but did not confirm if they were directly linked to the June 2023 murder of Sikh separatist leader Nijjar.
