Kashmir weather Alert ⚠️
Two Back-to-Back Western Disturbances to hit j&k
● 18 - 19 Dec: Dry & Cloudy weather is expected across J&K
● 20 Dec: Mostly dry weather. A few places in higher reaches may record a light spell of snowfall, particularly along the Sonamarg - Drass axis, and in the higher reaches of Bandipora and Kupwara.
------
■ The first WD's effect will be mostly felt from Saturday night (20 Dec night) onwards. The second WD will join this system on Monday (22 Dec) and will persist till Tuesday afternoon (23 Dec).
💠 Rain/snow activities are expected to commence from Saturday night onwards, starting over higher reaches, with peak activity likely on Sunday or Monday.
▪︎ Current analysis suggests that higher reaches of north Kashmir will be most affected, particularly Kupwara district higher reaches.
💠 Snowfall over higher elevations will range from light to heavy, with heavy snowfall mainly expected over Kupwara higher reaches, and may extend to the higher areas of Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Baramulla.
■ Overall system intensity is expected to remain light to moderate. Plains are likely to witness light rainfall, with moderate rainfall in some areas.
■ Due to relatively higher temperatures, snowfall over plain areas appears unlikely. So, may have to wait longer for the first snow spell.
■ Tourist areas like Gulmarg and Sonamarg are also expected to receive snowfall, with conditions favourable for light to moderate accumulation.
▪︎ The second WD may prolong snowfall activity over Kupwara higher reaches until Tuesday afternoon. As temperatures are expected to stay relatively lower between Monday night and Tuesday morning, dry snow is possible if precipitation occurs.
Nearby areas to Kupwara district can also be affected.
■ Jammu Region Outlook:
Jammu plains: Mostly cloudy weather with light rainfall
Middle reaches: Light to moderate rainfall
Higher reaches: Light to moderate snowfall
● Note:
1. The precipitation isn't expected to be on the higher side, but due to cold temperatures the snow accumulation can be higher due to dry snow in higher reaches (above 3200 m).
2. Flight operations are not expected to be affected.
3. Air pollution levels are likely to drop significantly, offering short-term but notable relief. The risk of forest fires is also expected to reduce considerably.
4. Any changes will be updated based on real-time ground observations.
