About the diocese:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Punalur (Latin: Dioecesis Punalurensis) is a diocese located in the city of Punalur in the Ecclesiastical province of Trivandrum in India. Punalur was bifurcated from the Diocese of Quilon and

created into a separate diocese by the Papal Bull โ€œVerba Chritiโ€(Word of Christ) of Pope John Paul II, issued on 21st December, 1985. Belgian Carmelite Fathers were the first missionaries in this area. During the Second World War the first missionaries had to go back, entrusting the missions to the Diocesan clergy. Mathias Kappil is the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Punalur and he was consecrated on 13th April 1986 and took the official charge of the diocese as a bishop on 16th May 1986. In 2005 Bishop Mathias Kappil retired and on 3rd May 2005 Rt. Dr. Joseph Kariyil was consecrated as the second Bishop of Punalur. He served the diocese for four years. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan was nominated as the third Bishop of Punalur to succeed Bishop Joseph Kariyil who was transferred to Cochin Diocese. Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan was consecrated on 28th June 2009. Punalur Diocese comprises of the civil district of Pathanamthitta and the parts of the districts of Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvanthapuram and the taluks of Chengannur, Kottarakara, Kozhencerry, Kunnathur, Mavelikara, Pathanapuram and Ranny.

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony โ€“ St. Charles Borromeo Church, Iyacode, Kadakkal

The foundation stone for St. Charles Borromeo Church, Iyacode, Kadakkal, was solemnly laid on 3rd October 2025 by Rt. Rev. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, Bishop of Punalur Diocese.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Fr. Jose OCD ,South Kerala Province, along with Fr. Ajeesh Cleetus, the Procurator of the Diocese, the Parish Priest, and the Sisters serving the parish.

It was a blessed and memorable occasion for the faithful of Iyacode as the new chapter in their spiritual journey was marked with prayer, unity, and hope.
