Bajaj V, Made of INS Vikrant's Scrap Metal, Unveiled in India; Launch in FY 2015-16

In less than a year, Bajaj Auto has introduced two new 150cc offerings. The Bajaj AS150 for the adventure tourer junta and the Avenger Street 150 for those who love cruisers. Aside from this they also have the popular street naked Pulsar 150 that continues to be the best selling bike in its class even today. Despite its wide portfolio in the 150cc class, Bajaj seems to think that there is still space for more. And to ensure that no gap is left unattended, they have now introduced the V15, which will be priced between Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000, dearer to the 60k price tag.

Last year, ZigWheels was the first to break the news about Bajajâ??s plans to start a new commuter brand. The Chakan based motorcycle manufacturer will finally take the wraps off its new range of commuters. Christened V in the honour of the INS Vikrant, this new offering makes use of the metal from the famous aircraft carrier that played a crucial role in the Indo-Pak 1971 war. Keeping in mind that it is made from the remains of the INS Vikrant, the V15 will be marketed as a limited edition model for the first few years. Once all the metal from the INS Vikrant is used, Bajaj will launch a cheaper regular version of the V15.

The bike features a scrambler-like retro styling with a small bikini fairing, a long and low 13-litre fuel tank, and a just-so-slightly stepped pillion seat. Split five-spoke alloys with front disc brake and the twin shcok hydraulic gas charged suspension at the rear complete the look. Thereâ??s a special marine-themed logo embossed on the tank signifying the bikeâ??s military origins.

Giving it a unique design is its trapezoidal headlight, claimed to be 60 per cent brighter than competition. In profile, the new Bajaj V15 looks like a cafe racer due to its removable rear cowl, which covers the rear half of the seat. At the back it gets classic LED tail lamp, with brunch metal garnish.

The Bajaj V15 will be powered by an all-new 150cc DTSi single-cylinder oil-cooled unit that makes 12PS of power at 7,500 rpm and 13Nm of peak torque at 5,500 rpm. It is essentially the same engine that also works force on the Discover 150S and the Discover 150F. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed transmission.

In terms and of features the Bajaj V comes with a semi-digital instrument cluster, with colour changing fuel gauge. In front the premium commuter gets 240mm disc and 130mm drum brakes on rear wheels.

The new Bajaj V will go on sale from March 2016, and is offered in two colours - the ebony black and pearl white. Bajaj is planning to produce upto 20,000 units on the Bajaj V per month, and focus mainly on the domestic market.

The Bajaj V15 will be placed between the Discover and Pulsar range of motorcycles. Competing against the likes of the Suzuki Gixxer and the Hero Xtreme Sports, it will be interesting to see how this new offering from Bajaj fares in the Indian market.
