देवी दुर्गाले महिषासुर नामक राक्षसहरूलाई मारेको दिनको सम्झनामा दशैं मनाइन्छ - जसले देवताहरूको संसार, देवलोकलाई मारेका थिए। दश दिनको युद्धपछि दुर्गा विजयी भइन् र त्यसबेलादेखि दशैंलाई पन्ध्र दिनभन्दा बढी समयसम्म खराब विरुद्धको लडाइँको प्रतीकका रूपमा मनाइन्छ। दशैं, जसलाई विजया दशमी पनि भनिन्छ, भारतका केही भागहरूमा पनि मनाइन्छ। भुटानका लोहत्शाम्पा र म्यानमारका बर्मी गोर्खाहरूले पनि यो पर्व मनाउँछन्।

भारतका हिन्दूहरूले दशैंलाई थोरै फरक तरिकाले मनाउँछन् र अन्य नामहरू जस्तै नवरात्रि वा दशहरा।

दशहरा, जसलाई हिन्दू धर्ममा दसरा वा विजयादशमी पनि भनिन्छ, विष्णुको अवतार, रामको पत्नी सीतालाई अपहरण गर्ने १० टाउको भएको राक्षस राजा रावणमाथि रामको विजयको प्रतीकको रूपमा मनाइन्छ। यस पर्वको नाम संस्कृत शब्द दशा ("दस") र हरा ("हार") बाट आएको हो। मुख्य आकर्षण "रावण दहन" हो, जहाँ असलको विजयको प्रतीकका रूपमा दानव राजा रावणको विशाल पुत्ला दहन गरिन्छ। दुष्टमाथि। परिवारहरूले मिठाईहरू आदानप्रदान गर्छन्, र बच्चाहरूले उचित सवारीको आनन्द लिन्छन्।
