Pune Students Protest Over Women’s Safety

Around 150–200 students and young professionals gathered at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue near the Pune Collector’s Office on September 30, demanding safer public spaces and stronger action on women’s safety.

Organised by college students through social media, the peaceful protest was held in solidarity with recent women’s safety demonstrations in Delhi. Protesters opposed curfews and restrictions on women’s movement, calling instead for prevention of harassment and sexual violence.

Key demands included faster police action, better implementation of existing laws, wider CCTV coverage and greater accountability for women’s safety. Participants also shared experiences of harassment and feeling unsafe while travelling through Pune at night.

The protest was conducted peacefully with police coordination.
