Direct-to-consumer brands are shifting their growth strategy toward retailers, with new moves at Walmart and Target.

Hallpass, a low-sugar candy brand backed by Medici Brands, launched nationwide at Walmart last month. Curie recently rebranded its personal care products for Walmart shoppers. Little Spoon will sell 50 products in Target stores by the end of the year, up from 22 at launch last year.

The shift reflects a new playbook for emerging brands and long-established DTC brands that first built niche audiences before pursuing large distribution deals with Walmart, Target, and Costco.

Converse apologized after social media users said two recent ads recalled Klan imagery and a lynching. The first ad, posted on Sept. 3, featured global ambassador Karina from aespa and the Chuck 70 X sneaker. Some users pointed to the spotlight, white triangle, skirt, and dangling shoes as elements that evoked disturbing imagery. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown wrote, "That’s a lynching, yes?"

Converse said it was sorry, understood why the image was deeply upsetting, removed it from its channels, and is working to remove it everywhere it appeared. The controversy also pulled in another Converse ad for a Palmes collaboration, which features a man on a ladder holding sneakers overhead.

Some users said the outrage was overblown, while others called out the imagery as harmful. What do you think about brand ads that prompt this kind of reaction?

Google is rolling out new AI-powered shopping tools ahead of the holidays. The updates are aimed at helping merchants understand how consumers are discovering products and how their products appear across Google properties.

The new capabilities include AI performance insights in Merchant Center, which manages brands ecommerce catalogs. Google also expanded Universal Commerce Protocol, known as UCP, and introduced tools focused on conversational product discovery.

The broader shift in commerce media is clear. Retailers are bringing advertising, loyalty, commerce, and measurement closer together as AI becomes a larger part of shopping experiences.

AI companies should expect accidents as increasingly capable models are deployed, and Sam Altman says the industry must build a culture of openly reporting and learning from them.

During a conversation at Dreamforce with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Altman said accidents with any new technology are regrettably unavoidable. He added that he is confident the industry can police AI safety.

Altman compared the approach he wants for AI safety to aviation, where regulators and companies investigate accidents and use those findings to improve safety across the broader system.

The message is clear. As AI capabilities grow, the response to mistakes may matter as much as the technology itself. How should the industry handle AI safety from here?

PebblePost has named Adam Soroca as CEO as the company expands beyond direct mail and moves through a rebrand.

Soroca, the former chief product officer at Magnite, is replacing Jacob Ross, who led the company for more than six years. In his first week, Soroca outlined three priorities for the next 90 days.

Those priorities include strengthening PebblePost’s purchase data graph, its underlying database, and extending the company into new media channels beyond CTV.

He pointed to display, audio, and mobile as key formats, and noted his experience building and scaling omni-channel buying across CTV, display, online video, mobile app, and audio.

Howl has sold its creator division to Connexity, the commerce platform owned by Taboola, in a quietly completed August deal.

The sale adds Howl's creator business to Connexity's existing creator affiliate operation, ShopYourLikes. Connexity is also reaching out to brands that had worked with Howl on the creator side.

Howl founder Li Haslett Chen said Connexity will continue to invest in and grow Howl as a leading creator commerce platform in tech, gaming, and collectibles.

The deal comes as Howl faces renewed concerns over late or delayed payments to publishers and creators. Connexity has said fixing payments is its top priority, and has since paid off balances owed to creators.

Howl says it is continuing to operate while it evaluates what comes next, and plans to remain in the commerce space. What stands out most to you about this move?

A new forecast shows global ad revenue reaching $1.3 trillion by the end of the year, an 11% increase year over year.

The growth is being driven by AI companies in two ways.

They are creating tools that make ad buying more efficient, and they are also becoming major ad buyers themselves.

Additional figures from the forecast include:

Global ad revenue grew 12.9% in the second quarter of 2026.
Excluding U.S. midterm political ads, revenues are expected to rise 9.8% in the third quarter.

The forecast also describes this growth as unusually rapid after the industry passed $1 trillion for the first time in 2024.

Retail media is expanding with a new Amazon and OpenAI partnership that brings ChatGPT ads into Amazon Ads buying tools.

Advertisers will be able to buy ads within the AI answer engine through Amazon’s demand-side platform. Amazon Ads sales reps will also help brands with bidding strategies and with "context hints" that guide where ads appear.

OpenAI’s ad system will still control which ads are delivered on its platform, while Amazon supports the buying process.

The move adds another layer to retail media as brands look for new places to reach shoppers inside AI-powered experiences. It also comes alongside broader activity in retail media, including Walmart’s growing advertising ambitions and new in-store screens.

DeepIntent has launched Cora, an AI platform with multiple agents built for healthcare marketers. The platform is designed to let teams execute tasks with conversational language and manage campaign planning and media ex*****on across channels.

Cora can handle stages of planning from analyzing data to developing audience strategies, including linear TV through a VideoAmp integration. In beta testing, it cut marketing planning time cycles by 50%, and over 95% of clients reported faster workflows.

DeepIntent is positioning Cora for a market that is becoming more complex as specialized drugs target narrower patient populations. The company also plans to add new data signals related to payers and drug coverage through Helix, an application built to protect patient privacy.
