Capgemini and Intel have created a physical AI demonstration built around the Tower of Hanoi, showing how a robot can see, understand, decide, act, and observe locally at the edge.

The demo was introduced at Intel’s booth at AI Infra Summit 2026 in Santa Clara, September 15 to 17, 2026. It combines computer vision, conventional software, a vision language model, and a vision language action model to move puzzle pieces between pegs one step at a time.

The system uses different compute resources for different workloads. The CPU manages the application and conventional software, the integrated GPU runs the model responsible for robotic movement, and the NPU supports scene understanding.

The setup also includes a live view of the camera feeds and AI outputs, making it easier to see how each action is produced and to investigate unexpected behavior.

How important is observability when AI controls physical machines?

U.S. industrial production stayed flat in August, while manufacturing output fell 0.3% after seven straight months of gains. At the same time, several manufacturers announced major U.S. investments, expansions, and facility openings.

Notable moves include:
• ArtiCast Holdings plans to invest $10.3 million in a new Mississippi factory and create 100 jobs.
• Hitachi Energy will spend $528 million to expand transformer manufacturing in Mississippi and add more than 700 jobs.
• Hovione opened a new 31,000-square-foot facility in New Jersey as part of a $100 million U.S. investment cycle.
• Reckitt said it will spend up to $600 million across two U.S. facilities in New Jersey and North Carolina.

Capacity utilization remained unchanged at 76.3%, while new orders for metalworking machinery reached $605.8 million in July. Meanwhile, layoff notices continue to appear at several manufacturers across the country.

What stands out most in these latest manufacturing shifts?

State leaders in New York, New Mexico, Ohio, and Illinois are moving ahead with new manufacturing workforce programs and training facilities.

In New York, a $69.6 million advanced technology center opened at Monroe Community College in Brighton. The 100,000-square-foot facility will support workforce development in advanced manufacturing and semiconductor industries, with training in optical technology, automotive technology, precision machining, HVAC, and renewable energy.

In New Mexico, Central New Mexico Community College is developing an advanced manufacturing and workforce training campus on a 37-acre site near Sandia National Laboratories’ science and technology park.

In Ohio, Ohio State University received an 18-month contract to establish a machining workforce development and upskilling program.

In Illinois, five community colleges will receive $20 million in grants to create manufacturing training academies across the state.

How do these investments compare with the workforce needs in your region?

NIST has awarded over $30 million to 12 Manufacturing Extension Partnership centers in 11 states and Puerto Rico to support advanced manufacturing adoption.

The funding is aimed at helping small and medium-sized businesses adopt technologies including artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and additive manufacturing.

The 12 winners must secure nonfederal matching funds or cost share of at least 50%, and the awards cover only the first year of the project. Future funding will depend on available resources, performance reviews, and alignment with MEP, NIST, and Commerce Department priorities.

Each awardee will enter a cooperative agreement with NIST for an evaluation of up to five years. The sites will also develop shared metrics for technology adoption and work with flagship manufacturers in priority sectors.

How should manufacturers measure success as they adopt advanced technologies?

The Elmet Group has reached two agreements with the Department of Defense worth a total of $2.45 billion to strengthen the domestic tungsten metal supply chain.

The package includes a five-year, $2 billion indefinite delivery and indefinite quantity contract awarded to Elmet Technologies on Sept. 11. It also includes a $450 million purchase of Class A preferred stock through the Economic Defense Unit program.

Key details include:
• A $150 million minimum commitment under the IDIQ contract
• Planned expansion and modernization of U.S. manufacturing capacity
• Upgrades and a restart of the Springer Tungsten Complex in Imlay, Nevada

Tungsten is used in components for more than 100 DOD programs, including the F-35 fighter jet and missile systems. What do you see as the biggest impact of this move on U.S. supply chains?

Honda Motor Co. has invested in Minnesota-based Niron Magnetics, a developer of rare earth-free magnets for electrified vehicle powertrains and other applications.

The investment was made through Honda Xcelerator Ventures, Honda’s global open innovation program. The amount was not disclosed.

Honda said rare earth metals used in many electric propulsion motors are subject to resource constraints and market fluctuations. Niron Magnetics is working to address those challenges with magnets that use iron nitride instead of rare earth metals.

Niron Magnetics also says its planned 287,000-square-foot manufacturing plant will be operational in 2027 and could produce up to 1,500 tons annually, with 175 workers. The company says its magnets can exceed the performance of rare-earth based magnets by up to 50% and offer better stability across a wider range of temperatures.

How do you see rare earth-free magnets shaping future vehicle design?

Manufacturers are looking beyond backup power as outages, peak demand, emissions rules, and utility incentives reshape energy planning.

Facilities that rely on diesel generators face several risks. Diesel degrades in storage within six to 12 months, standby generators are intended for short-term outages, and UPS systems can fail when batteries sit idle and corrode.

Other pressures are adding to the shift.

Weather-related outages have doubled over the past two decades, severe storms account for more than 80% of US power outages, and peak demand is forecast to increase 69% over the next decade. Demand charges can also reach 30% to 70% of monthly electricity costs for heavy users.

Microgrids are gaining attention as a way to combine on-site generation, storage, power conditioning, and intelligent controls. Natural gas generation can cut emissions by as much as 90% compared with diesel.

How is your facility thinking about outage resilience and peak demand costs?

Manufacturers across steel, rare earths, medtech, defense and other sectors are expanding U.S. production with hundreds of millions of dollars in new facility investments.

Recent openings and projects include:

U.S. Steel resumed operations at Blast Furnace 14 in Gary, Indiana, after a $350 million reline project.
Array Technologies opened a $50 million manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, expanding domestic capacity and supporting more than 300 jobs.
USA Rare Earth broke ground on a $1.2 billion plant in Blacksburg, South Carolina, expected to create 490 jobs.
Covenant expanded missile production in Dallas, with a new factory set to begin work on Anthem in 2027.
Siemens Healthineers expanded its Rockford, Tennessee, campus with a $43.6 million investment.
SteelFab announced a more than $19 million expansion in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Curia opened a 70,000-square-foot expansion in Albuquerque supported in part by federal and state funding.

Which of these investments stands out most for domestic supply chains?

Cyclic Materials has opened a $20 million rare earth recycling facility in Mesa, Arizona, marking its first U.S. site and expanding domestic recovery capacity.

The 144,000-square-foot plant can process up to 25,000 metric tons of recycled scrap each year. It uses automated separation technology to recover magnets from discarded electronics, robotics, medical devices, and other materials.

Key details:
• More than 7,000 metric tons of scrap material has already been delivered
• The site has begun commercial operation
• First shipments are expected later this month
• The project created more than 30 jobs

The company said the Mesa site is its largest rare earth magnet recycling operation by annual processing capacity. A second U.S. facility in Chesterfield County, South Carolina is under construction and is expected to be ready by 2028.
