The course introduces participants to some of the major historical periods of American cinema, quintessential American genres (the western, film noir and horror), and modes of production that include the rich documentary traditions and landmarks in experimental, non-narrative, avant-garde cinemas. It examines various aspects of ‘classical’ Hollywood cinema and the Hollywood studio system (1920s-1960s) which laid the foundation for the global dominance of this film industry. It also explores the break-up of the motion picture studios, demographic changes, the film ratings system, the “blockbuster syndrome,” the “event film,” independent filmmaking, growth of home video, and market globalization during the 1970s New Wave and over subsequent eras. Over five days, this course, which is a selective overview, contextualizes seminal films (Citizen Kane, The Searchers, The Exorcist, Bowling for Columbine et. al.) and situates major filmmakers (Orson Welles, John Ford, John Cassavetes, Robert Altman and others) in their socio-political, economic and cultural milieus.

Ever felt the inspiration to write a story but lost the plot half-way? Or dreamed of a character you couldn’t bring to life? Or started on a high note and ended with a roadblock? This is a beginner’s guide to transporting your inner storyteller onto the stage.

The workshop offers the push you need, polishing your vision, and speeding up the drafting process. Spread over two weeks and six sessions, ‘Stage Right‘ dives into the anatomy of the three act structure, the mechanics of dramatic writing, and the poetics of how great stories embody life’s eternal themes. It identifies elements like – characterisations, plot lines, scene breakdowns and narrative styles – and the role they play in helping playwrights craft new words. At the end of the workshop you’ll be guided to write and present a short, engaging and original stage play.

The Workshop will be conducted over 2 Weeks from 18:00 to 21:00 IST on MON-WED-FRI on Google Meet.

19/04/2021

InVerse, a Poetry Writing Workshop, will connect word and wonder, image and imagination, questions and quests. Yeats famously said: Out of our quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of our quarrel with ourselves we make poetry. The workshop will use the form and flexibility of poetry to reflect upon our relationships with ourselves and the world that we must negotiate. Participants will be led through introspective discussions, word-associations and examples of classical and experimental poetry. From ballads to shape poems, they will go through a behind-the-scenes journey that will assist with their own writing. They will be guided to develop their poetic voice and also practice fresh ways of expression. The course will also share information related to publishing opportunities, magazines and contests related to poetry.
