During the school holidays I used to go to the set of my dad's films to watch his shoot. Back then many actors' children used to be scared of coming on movie sets. Because back then there was no Vanette Vans like today. Sets weren't air conditioned either. But I loved watching the shooting. For me, she used to be an education.
Father was very friendly with us. But mom was strict. Father never raised his hand over us. They laughed hard at our mistakes. We also knew our limit. We never tried to cross those limits.
Even though I was Amjad Khan's son. But my teachers never gave me any special treatment because of her. The school I studied in was Manekzy Cooper. That school was in juhu. There used to read more star kids. Twinkle Khanna, Rinky Khanna, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, Sajid Khan, Farah Khan, Sharman Joshi and Rani Mukherjee, all of them were in my school.
I was three years old when I watched Sholey. I feel so bad when dad gets beaten up in Sholey. My mother used to tell me I started crying. Even started screaming. Dad did a great job at Sholey and Chess player. These are the two movies they had to prepare a lot for. Back when actors did not research for their role in those days. And today? Today, even the average actors prepare for their role. And then people start calling them great actors. Now only after graduating from NSD people start calling any actor a great actor.

Despite many rehearsals, they had to pay 70 taxes while shooting their first scene. That's why they weren't allowed to shoot that whole schedule. But my dad never talked to us about that.
They never cared how much money they have in their pocket. All they cared was to get them sleep comfortably at night. Dad never talked to us about how many actors were jealous of him. How many directors put them in trouble. And how many producers ran them away for their fees.
I know what an important role Salim sahab and Javed sahab played in getting my father Sholay film. More than Javed sir, Salim sir was trying to get that role to my father. Sholey's performance wasn't very special when it was released. Distributors were putting a lot of pressure on Ramesh Sippy ji to change the movie. Some also said that Amjad's voice does not have guts. All his dialogues should be dubbed by someone else.
The pressure was so high that Salim Saheb also had to agree to dub my father's dialogues from someone else. He was Amitabh ji who advised Ramesh ji not to make any changes in the film. Let what is there remain like this. And finally Ramesh ji left the decision to dub my father's dialogues from someone else. Due to that incident, my father's relationship with Salim and Javed Sahib were spoiled. And never been normal again.
Salim Khan ji called me home few days after my father died and said that the misunderstandings between your father and us have become very old. Your father is no longer in this world. Now it all must end. I loved this jesture of them. Today I have good relations with all three sons of Salim Saheb. We meet very well when we meet. And because of that jesture Salim sir's respect has increased a lot in my eyes.
My dad didn't change even when he became famous. But the people around them sure have changed. Some flattering people became their companions. They always stored around Dad. My father was such a simple man that he could not recognize those spoons. I'd say that was my dad's fault. Those sycophants used to come home at eight am. So dad can go shooting with him. We used to come home for lunch even on Sundays. They were all free-loading type people. Where dad used to go he used to go with him.
Dad's college friends always be with him honestly. They never stopped any trouble. They never went on movie sets. Neither insisted on teaching the script. But these sycophants ruin the career of human. Because these people advise you what movie you should do, not which one. Let's gossip the fizul. This greatly affects your judgment and your relationship with others. My father suffered a lot of losses in his career because of these spoons.
Another thing that greatly affected my father's career was his accident. Father was going to Goa for a shoot when his vehicle had a very dangerous accident. They were left to die. Their lives were saved. But they started gaining a lot of weight. And they could not do anything. She could never recover from the side effects of that accident.
I wasn't home the day my dad died. I came home at eight am then I found out what happened. She was 48 years old when she died. And I was only 18 then. I was very badly affected by their departure. It took me more than a year to recover. I always remember my father. My connection with my father was very good. They used to talk to me about my career plans. But we never thought they would be gone so soon.
Even my father didn't get the respect he truly deserved. Actors are considered great by ordinary. But people remember my father just for the role of Gabbar Singh. He was a much better actor than all those ordinary actors. I consider chess player their number one movie. Sholey comes on second notch.
