Pedals Explained
Clutch (Left Pedal)
Operated with the left foot only.
Used when starting the car, changing gears, or stopping.
Brake (Middle Pedal)
Operated with the right foot.
Used to slow down or stop the car.
Accelerator (Right Pedal)
Also operated with the right foot.
Used to increase speed.
Manual Gear Shifter
Located next to the driverโs seat.
Connected to the transmission.
Typically has positions for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and Reverse (sometimes 6th in modern cars).
How to Drive a Manual Car
Starting the Car
Press the clutch fully down with your left foot.
Move the gear shifter to Neutral.
Start the engine.
Moving the Car
Press the clutch fully down.
Shift into 1st gear.
Slowly release the clutch while gently pressing the accelerator with the right foot.
The car begins to move.
Changing Gears
To shift up (1st โ 2nd, 2nd โ 3rd, etc.):
Release the accelerator.
Press the clutch fully down.
Move the gear shifter to the next gear.
Slowly release the clutch while pressing the accelerator.
Slowing Down / Stopping
To slow: release the accelerator and press the brake.
If coming to a full stop:
Press the clutch fully down + brake.
Shift gear to Neutral.
Release clutch after stopping.
Reverse
Press the clutch fully down.
Move gear shifter to R (Reverse).
Control car slowly using clutch and accelerator.
