The Ayodhya Temple refers to the Ram Mandir (Temple) that is being constructed in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ram, a central figure in the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana. The location of Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram.
The construction of the Ram Mandir has been a subject of significant historical and political importance in India. The dispute over the site dates back centuries, with tensions rising particularly in the late 20th century, leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, which stood at the disputed site. The demolition sparked communal violence and legal battles for decades.
In November 2019, the Supreme Court of India ruled in favor of building the Ram Mandir at the disputed site and ordered that an alternative piece of land be provided for the construction of a mosque. This ruling cleared the way for the temple's construction.
In August 2020, the foundation stone for the temple was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the beginning of the temple’s construction. The Ram Mandir is expected to be a grand structure, symbolizing the cultural and religious significance of Lord Ram for millions of Hindus.
The temple is being designed to accommodate thousands of devotees and will feature intricate carvings, large hall spaces, and be constructed in a traditional Nagara style of architecture. The project is seen as a symbol of the fulfillment of a long-standing aspiration for many Hindus, while also representing a sensitive issue of communal harmony in India.
