A shrink disc (or shrink coupling) is a type of keyless, friction-type shaft-hub connection used to transmit torque between a shaft and a mounted component (such as a pulley, gear, or coupling) without the need for keys, splines, or tapers.

How it Works

A shrink disc is fitted over the outside diameter of the hub.

When the bolts on the shrink disc are tightened, it compresses the hub onto the shaft using high radial pressure.

This frictional connection allows torque and axial forces to be transmitted without backlash.

Advantages

No keyway → avoids shaft weakening.
High torque capacity.
Easy installation and removal (just loosen/tighten bolts).
Self-centering → good for high-speed applications.
No fretting corrosion if installed properly.

Typical Applications in Discharge Areas

Discharge rollers in continuous casting machines.

Discharge side of pumps or gearboxes.

Conveyor discharge drive shafts.

Fan discharge shafts.
