Bastar Dussehra: World’s Longest Festival & a Legacy of True Power 🏹🌿✨
Bastar Dussehra is no longer an unheard-of tradition—it is a 75-day-long grand celebration of faith, spirituality, and community harmony that redefines how we view power and governance.
Key Highlights of Bastar Dussehra:
· Origin (1408 AD): Initiated by Chalukya King Purushottam Dev after receiving the title of Rathpati at Jagannath Puri.
· Not About Ravan Vadh: Unlike standard Dussehra, this festival has no connection to the killing of Ravan. It is entirely dedicated to the region's revered deity, Maa Danteshwari, and collective folk energy (Lok-Shakti).
· The Engineering Marvel: A 4-storey tall, multi-ton wooden chariot constructed without a single iron nail or nut-bolt.
· Master Craftsmen: Artisans from the Savra and Jharumra communities shape local Sal and Tinsa wood using only axes.
· True Social Harmony: Driven by every section of society—nagada drums by the Mahra community, penance by the Halba tribe, ritual consent from a Mirgan maiden, and pulled by thousands of Gond and Muria tribes people.
In Bastar, leadership stems from the royal court, divine legitimacy comes from the Goddess, but the true life force of the festival belongs to the entire community. This perfect balance has kept the 600-year-old tradition alive and dynamic.
