नागपंचमीसाठी घरीच मातीचा नाग बनवण्याची ही माझी पहिलीच वेळ होती. सकाळी बायका रानात जाऊन वारुळाची पूजा करतात आणि तिथली थोडी माती आणतात. या मातीपासून नागाची मूर्ती बनवली जाते, अशी पद्धत आहे. काही ठराविक स्थानिक वनस्पती व फुलांसह या मुर्तीची पूजा करून दिवसभर देव्हाऱ्यात ठेवतात मग संध्याकाळी जंगलात एखाद्या झाडाजवळ विसर्जन करतात. सण साजरा करायची किती शाश्वत पद्धत ना! शेतकरी जीवनात नागपंचमीचा सण महत्वाचा असतो. शहरात (किंवा आता गावातही) नागाची रंगवलेली मूर्ती विकत मिळते. पण गावी हौसेने शेतकरी अशी मूर्ती बनवतात त्यातला आनंदच वेगळा!
This was my first attempt to mold an idol of a snake at home for Nag Panchami. In the morning, women go to the fields, worship the anthill, and bring back a little clay from there. An idol of the snake is then made from this clay, as per tradition. The idol is worshipped with certain local plants and flowers, kept in the household shrine throughout the day, and later immersed near a tree in the forest by evening. Such a sustainable way of celebrating a festival! In a farmer’s life, Nag Panchami holds great significance. In cities (and now even in villages), painted idols of snakes are sold in the market. But in villages, farmers joyfully craft these idols themselves, and the happiness in that is truly unique!
