Sports Excellence Begins with Scientific Training: Dr Shahid Iqbal Reviews World-Class Facilities at GCOPE Ganderbal
Commissioner Secretary Calls for Optimum Use of Advanced Sports Infrastructure, Pushes for New Diploma Courses and Research-Driven Athlete Development

GANDERBAL, June 11: Reinforcing the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s commitment to developing a robust sports ecosystem and nurturing future champions through scientific training, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services and Sports (YSS), on Thursday conducted an extensive review of academic, research and sports infrastructure facilities at the **Government College of Physical Education> in Gadoora, Ganderbal.
Accompanied by Anuradha Gupta, Dr Shahid Iqbal chaired a high-level review meeting with the college administration and faculty members, focusing on academic excellence, research initiatives, infrastructure development and the overall growth of the institution as a premier centre for sports education.
The Commissioner Secretary inspected ongoing and proposed construction projects across the campus and reviewed the progress of developmental works aimed at strengthening academic facilities, athlete training systems and research capabilities. He stressed the need for timely completion of projects and effective utilization of available resources to create a modern learning environment for students.
A major highlight of the visit was the inspection of the state-of-the-art Sports Science and Research Laboratory, where students pursuing Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) and Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) programmes showcased advanced scientific equipment used for athlete evaluation and performance enhancement.
The laboratory features cutting-edge facilities, including anthropometric assessment systems, force plate technology for biomechanical analysis, magnetic timing gates for speed and agility testing, cricket performance analysis software, bowling machines, Basic Life Support (BLS) equipment and several other sophisticated sports science tools designed to improve athlete performance through evidence-based training methods.
Expressing satisfaction over the quality of infrastructure available at the institution, Dr Shahid Iqbal remarked that GCOPE possesses the potential to emerge as a leading centre of excellence in sports education and research. He directed the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports to ensure maximum utilization of the advanced facilities for the benefit of students, coaches and athletes across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Commissioner Secretary also advocated the introduction of diploma and certificate programmes in emerging areas of sports sciences, physical education and fitness management, aimed at expanding career opportunities for youth and strengthening professional training in the sector.
During an interactive session with students, Dr Shahid Iqbal listened to their concerns, suggestions and aspirations, assuring them that every genuine issue would receive due attention. He encouraged students to make full use of the facilities available and strive for excellence in both academics and sports.
Sharing his vision for the institution, he emphasized the importance of integrating sports science, research and modern training methodologies into athlete development programmes to help produce internationally competitive sportspersons from Jammu and Kashmir.
On the sidelines of the visit, an insightful presentation on “Bridging the Gap Between Physical Education, Sports Science, Physiotherapy and Health Science” was delivered by Dr Suhail Ahmed Mir, highlighting the growing role of interdisciplinary research in enhancing sports performance and athlete well-being.
The Commissioner Secretary and DG YSS later interacted with young athletes participating in various sporting events on the campus, including the Inter-Zone Badminton Competition organised by the District Youth Services and Sports Office, Ganderbal. They applauded the participants for their dedication, discipline and competitive spirit.
Senior officers of the Youth Services and Sports Department, including the District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Ganderbal, were also present during the visit.
The visit underscored the government's broader vision of transforming sports infrastructure, promoting scientific athlete development and positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a hub of excellence in sports education and research.
