The Alveolus
The alveoli are tiny, balloon-shaped air sacs located at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. Their extremely thin walls, surrounded by a dense network of capillaries, facilitate the vital process of gas exchange. Oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream from the air in the alveoli, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled, driven by partial pressure gradients.
