hummingbird flower recipes ! I cook (Kathurumurunga)
Delicious & traditional shri lanka Dishes

The Kathurumurunga flower, also known as hummingbird flower, is in full bloom—and in today’s video, I bring you a celebration of Sri Lankan flavors made with this beautiful edible blossom. From crispy egg rolls filled with Kathurumurunga petals to refreshing cucumber juice, each recipe blends tradition, flavor, and creativity in true village cooking style. As the Poson Perahara approaches, the hummingbird trees stood radiant—heavy with flowers that inspired not only sacred offerings, but today’s flavorful menu. I harvested the freshest white Kathurumurunga blossoms, their shape like honeybirds frozen mid-flight, and turned them into a soft, golden tempered egg stir-fry that melts in your mouth.
➡️ The egg rolls, stuffed with a mix of Kathurumurunga petals, spices, and herbs, came out golden and crunchy—perfect with a tall glass of homemade cucumber juice mixed with garden fruits. Light, nutritious, and refreshing on warm days. I also crafted a rich, textured side dish with Kathurumurunga leaves, cashews, papadam, noodles, and native spices—a perfect balance of crispy and creamy textures. Alongside, I made fragrant basmati rice with prawns, gently infused with Kathurumurunga greens for a soft, layered flavor.

To complete this nourishing spread, I prepared a chicken broth with celery, potatoes, and Kathurumurunga flowers—designed to warm, heal, and comfort. This video is full of hummingbird flower recipes, natural village cooking, Sri Lankan food traditions, and homemade drinks and snacks for the season.

Cassava! buble tea 'boda' made from extracted tapioca flour & other recipes from roots!

There was a heavy downpour day before yesterday which led the land to soak after the dry season. The month of the New Year is now around the corner. The heat would not beat anything. Uncle’s cassava cultivation has been fruitful than ever. To clear a path through the muck, one would need to eat at least seven or eight eggs. So that’s going to be a hard task.
The sesame balls, caramelized with sugar and made with finely grated cassava and purple sweet potatoes, hold a unique and delightful taste. The cassava, ground on the stone and pressed to separate the flour, must be drained of water and left to dry in the sun for three to four hours.
With the leftover cassava pieces, a two-layered delicious pudding was made by adding evaporated milk, jaggery, butter, cardamom powder, jackfruit, and thick milk, which the mothers ate, savoring the taste.
The sun-dried cassava starch weighed about one and a half kilograms. A small portion of it was mixed with cocoa powder to create a world-famous beverage—an effort driven by the family's shared love for indulging in delightful treats. ‘Bubble tea’ had been my favorite drink for several years now. When I handed my mother the glass, I playfully told her that I had crafted a drink meant to be sipped while savoring each gulp.
Father and the men set out to prune the tea bushes just as the first light of dawn touched the earth. ‘'Shall we fry a cassava and eat for our evening tea, brother?' Sumith uncle asked, tossing a few red onions from the kitchen shelf into his bag. Though he knew every nook and cranny of the kitchen, Sumith uncle still needed Mother’s help to find the dried Maldive fish. In a house ruled by a stealthy cat and a cunning, sharp-eyed dog, hiding the Maldive fish in a safe place was, without a doubt, one of Mother's greatest feats of heroism.
The bright red flowers of the berry tree serves an early sign that the New Year is around the corner. The guava tree in the backyard also plays its part in the seasonal transition. For the birds, our home is undoubtedly one of their most beloved places. I have often observed the presence of the Brown-headed Barbet on ripen papayas.
The honey-filled black berries have an amazingly sweet taste. By mixing them with boiled sago along with pomegranate and adding jelly cubes, a delicious side dish was prepared, not only to enjoy the flavors but also as a solution for the heat.
