I recently came across a message that made me pause.
“China has 4.3 million software engineers
India 5.8 million
USA 4.4 million
Russia 1.3 million
Among these… only India hasn’t produced even one globally used app, OS, database, cloud platform, AI, or social media.”
At first, it sounded shocking.
So I decided to look deeper.
And what I found tells a very different story 👇
Yes, the world’s most dominant tech platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Anthropic, Google etc came from the West.
But saying India has contributed nothing globally? That’s simply incorrect.
India has already built and scaled products used worldwide:
• powering businesses across the globe
• a developer essential worldwide
• a global SaaS leader
• operating at global scale
So what’s the real difference?
For years, India focused on:
• IT services
• Outsourcing excellence
• Building solutions for global clients
While countries like the USA focused on:
• Product innovation
• Venture capital ecosystems
• Global-first scaling
But this is changing.
India is rapidly moving from a service-driven ecosystem to a product-driven mindset.
And this shift is just getting started.
The real question is not:
“Why didn’t India build global products?”
The real question is:
“Are we ready to build the next global category leader?”
I believe we are 🇮🇳
What’s your take on this?
