Three Sikkim Police Officers Appointed to Indian Police Service (IPS)

The President of India has appointed three officers from the Sikkim Police Service to the prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS) on probation. The announcement comes under the powers granted by sub-rule (1) of rule 9 of the Indian Police Service (Recruitment) Rules, 1954, and sub-regulation (1) of regulation 9 of the Indian Police Service (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955.

The following officers have been selected for the Indian Police Service and allocated to the Sikkim Cadre:

1. Shammi Rai
2. Kunzang Dorjee Shangderpa
3. Paljor Wangyal Shenga

These officers will remain on probation for one year, as per the provisions of the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954. Additionally, they will undergo induction training in line with the guidelines set forth in sub-rule 5(4) of the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954, as amended on 10th May 2011.

Chief Minister of Sikkim attends State-Level Barahimizong Celebration in Suldung-Kamling

Soreng, December 17 (IPR): Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) and Madam Krishna Kumari Rai attended the State-Level Barahimizong celebration at Government Senior Secondary School Kamling under Rinchenpong Constituency, organised by the Akhil Sikkim Mangar Sangh, today.

The celebration saw the presence of Mr MN Sherpa Speaker (SLA), Mrs Raj Kumari Thapa Deputy Speaker (SLA), Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Ms Annapurna Alley Secretary (IPRD), former-Ministers, former-MLAs, former-Chairpersons, Zilla Adhakshya (Soreng), Up-Adhakshya (Soreng), Zilla Panchayats, Panchayats Members, DC (Soreng), SP (Soreng), Head of Offices of the district, officials, members from Nepal Mangar Sangh, teachers and public at large.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister extended greetings of the Barahimizong celebration, mentioning today’s celebration as pre-celebration. He then emphasised the sense of unity that the cultures and traditions brings within the community. Sharing his vision, he highlighted the developments done by the government in the state, where he stated that the state government will be providing an additional sanction of drinking water supply to the Suldung-Kamling region.

The Chief Minister specifically encouraged the Mangar Community to promote tourism in Suldung village with a vision of converting into “Mangar Village” with the establishment of homestays, which potentially demonstrates the rich culture of Mangar community along with the promotion of their traditional attire. He further reiterated on various aides that the Government of Sikkim has been providing in regard to the major sectors that includes heath sector, education sector through discretionary grants.

Acknowledging the demands presented today, he assured all that the government will address and provide the necessary demands in the days to come.

Welcoming the dignitaries and attendees, the Deputy Speaker (SLA) acknowledged the Chief Minister of Sikkim for providing all the support to all communities of the state. She then informed that not only Mangar community but all the communities had contributed for making the Barahimizong celebration a success. Mentioning the kindness of the Chief Minister, she apprised that the Mangarjong of Mangsari is gaining popularity, reflecting the growing recognition and unity.

Initially, Mr Erung Tenzing Lepcha MLA (Rinchenpong) extended thanks to the Chief Minister for considering Kamling in the context of the state-level Barahimizong celebration, while delivering the welcome address.

During the programme, the Chief Minister was felicitated with a letter of appreciation by the organiser, Government Senior Secondary School Kamling, and Nepal Mangar Sangh.

Mr Bishnu Rana President (Bharat Mangar Sangh) and also General Secretary (Antarrashtriya Mangar Sangh) presented a brief overview of Barahimizong and its traditions. He then stated that the Barahimizong is a festival observed by the Mangar Community and it has been celebrated as a day when Mangar people come together to pay homage to their forefathers and kuldevtaas (ancestral deities), by performing various religious rituals and rites with the prime objective of keeping the cultural and traditional heritage alive.

The event also released a new book named "Buddha Dharma Ra Aadhunik Bebashahi Haruma Yesko Naitik Prabhau Haru" written by Ms Neelima Mangar, a poetry “Aarmet (Kalpana Imagination)” written by Mr Bishnu Rana and “Mangarjong Sahitya Patrika Aanka 4” (Mangarjong Sahitik Prakashan Board).

The programme also saw the presentation of discretionary grants to Akhil Sikkim Mangar Association and Takuthang Primary School. Also, beneficiaries received support through the Chief Minister Education Assistance Scheme.

Earlier, the Chief Minister along with other dignitaries toured an old Mangar heritage house at Lower Suldung, the tour was followed by the visit to the stalls that showcased the traditional items from the Mangar community.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr CK Rana President (Akhil Sikkim Mangar Sangh).

Marathon Girl of Sikkim Clinches Silver Medal at Tata Marathon in Kolkata

Phurba Tamang, popularly known as the Marathon Girl of Sikkim, has brought pride to the state by securing the Silver Medal in the 25K Tata Steel Kolkata Marathon held in Kolkata, West Bengal in 25 -29 years age category. Phurba completed the challenging race with an impressive timing of 1 hour 52 minutes and 27 seconds.

She secured the second position ahead of Bandasharai Marwein of Meghalaya, while the first place was claimed by Puja Mondol of West Bengal.

Phurba Tamang, a dedicated athlete, currently serves under the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim. Her success is attributed to rigorous training under the guidance of her coach, Basant Pradhan.

Phurba’s achievement continues to inspire aspiring athletes in Sikkim and highlights her unwavering commitment to excellence in long distance running.

IIM Shillong Students Explore Bamboo Crafts and Industries in Sikkim

A group of students from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong visited Sikkim from 3rd to 20th December 2024 in two batches to study the market prospects of bamboo crafts and industries in the state.

As part of their study, the students had an interactive session with the Secretary of Horticulture, senior officials from the department, and Mr. Phurba Tamang, a prominent bamboo entrepreneur from Sikkim associated with Namthang Bamboo Handicrafts, which has become a focus center for promoting bamboo based initiatives.

The meeting, held in the chamber of the Secretary of Horticulture, began with a warm welcome to the visiting students.

During the interaction, the Secretary provided a detailed briefing on bamboo cultivation practices in Sikkim, emphasizing the state’s rich diversity of bamboo species and their unique importance. He also elaborated on marketing strategies and opportunities for bamboo products, aiming to inspire the students to contribute innovative ideas for the growth of the sector.

The initiative underscores the growing interest in sustainable industries and showcases Sikkim’s potential as a hub for bamboo crafts and entrepreneurship.

Sang-Rabdang Sub-Divisional Office Inaugurated by Chief Minister, Marking a New Era of Development

Gangtok, December 16 (IPR): The Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang-Golay inaugurated the Sub-Divisional Office at Sang-Rabdang today.

The newly established administrative hub is poised to play a pivotal role in driving progress and enhancing public services in the region. The inauguration reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to improving infrastructure and fostering holistic development.

The event had the presence of Mr NB Dahal, Minister, Roads and Bridges cm Area MLA, 17- Khamdong-Singtam Constituency, Mr Sonam Lama, Minister Ecclesiastical Department, Public Health Engineering and Water Resources Department, Mr Samdup Bhutia, Area MLA 16 - Tumin Lingi, Mr Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, Area MLA Martam Rumtek Constituency, along with other dignitaries.

Mr Tushar Nikhare, District Collector Gangtok, warmly welcomed the Chief Minister upon his arrival at the SDM office in Sang Rabdang, located within the Singtam Khamdong Constituency. During this visit, the Chief Minister interacted with district officials and assessed the facilities of the office building.

In addition, the Chief Minister inspected a proposed site in Rabdang village earmarked for the construction of the Sangay Choling Gumpa, further emphasising the State Government’s focus on cultural and spiritual development.

The day culminated in his participation in a grand inauguration ceremony, celebrating this significant development of the State.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister emphasised that the new facility will act as a critical center for administrative activities, ensuring streamlined governance and better accessibility for residents.

“Our government is dedicated to the comprehensive development of the region,” he stated. “We are focused on improving infrastructure, strengthening the economy, and uplifting the social well-being of our citizens. Progress requires a strategic and inclusive approach, addressing both immediate needs and long-term goals”, he added.

Chief Minister further mentioned the government’s development agenda includes prioritizing essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and administrative centers. These efforts aim to enhance connectivity and accessibility while creating opportunities for economic growth. Initiatives also include providing resources and training to empower the local population, he stressed.

“The vision behind these projects is to transform the area into a thriving and prosperous hub, serving as a model for progress and inclusivity. This milestone inauguration reinforces the government’s dedication to the welfare and advancement of the people, laying a strong foundation for sustained growth in the region”, stated the Chief Minister.

Mr NB Dahal in his welcome address extended a warm welcome to the Chief Minister and esteemed guests. He appreciated the dedicated efforts of the District Administrative Centre (DAC) officials, acknowledging their significant contributions to this developmental initiative. He stated that their hard work is pivotal in driving progress and enhancing community welfare.

Mr Tushar Nikhare, District Collector Gangtok provided a detailed overview of Sang Rabdang Sub-division during his address. He shared that the sub-division encompasses 3 Revenue Circles, 22 Revenue Blocks, 9 Gram Panchayat Units(GPUs) and 47 wards.

He narrated the journey of the Sang Rabdang Sub-division, stating that it was created in 2021 under The Sikkim (Re-organisation of Districts) Act, 2021, and subsequently renamed as the Sang Rabdang Sub-Divisional Office under The Sikkim (Re-organisation of Districts) (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Additionally, he highlighted that this Sub-Division Office is envisioned to serve as a model office setting benchmark in E-Governance and Good Governance practices.

He further extended his gratitude to the Chief Minister, along with Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary of Sikkim, and the Secretary of Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department for their guidance and support in realising this initiative.

During the program, grants-in-aid were distributed to financially vulnerable individuals from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund, aimed at providing essential support to those in need. The event also showcased vibrant cultural performances, including a Maruni Dance by PM Shree Singtam SSS, a Tamang Selo performance from Rabdang Ward, and classical dance presentation by artists from Gangtok District, enriching the occasion with local heritage and artistry.

The inauguration ceremony of the Sang Rabdang Sub-Divisional Office reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to improving infrastructure and fostering holistic development.

The ceremony concluded with words of thanks delivered by Mr Roshan S***a, SDM, Rabdang.

The establishment of the Sang Rabdang Sub-Divisional Office is expected to bring significant benefits to the residents of the Singtam-Khamdong Constituency.
