On 20 February 1947, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced that power would be transferred to Indian hands no later than June 1948. However, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India, brought forward the timeline amid growing communal tensions and violence.

India became independent on 15 August 1947, approximately 10½ months earlier than the original deadline. The date also marked the second anniversary of Japan’s announcement of surrender in World War II.

History changed, and India’s freedom arrived sooner than originally planned.
