Tribute on the Birth Anniversary of Late
Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari
On the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of the architect of modern Sikkim, the great and beloved leader, and the second Chief Minister of Sikkim, Late Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari, I offer my heartfelt tribute and respectful remembrance.
Born in Malbase, Soreng in West Sikkim, Bhandari ji began his career as a teacher and later dedicated his entire life to public service. In 1979, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the first time and went on to provide 14 years of stable political leadership to the state. During his tenure, he made remarkable contributions in the fields of education, health, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and rural development.
His most historic achievement was the inclusion of the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which brought immense pride to the entire Nepali-speaking community across India. By ensuring the rights of farmers, laborers, teachers, employees, and marginalized groups, he laid the foundation of equality and justice in society.
Bhandari ji was not only the pride of Sikkim but also of the entire Indian Nepali community. His ideals, strong determination, and unwavering dedication to public service will forever remain a source of inspiration for us all.
After the formation of the government, October 5th has been declared a public holiday every year in his honor, and the tradition of celebrating his birth anniversary with pride has been established.
Personally, I first saw him as the Chief Minister when I was just 11 years old, and since then, he has remained my role model and guiding light.
His inspiring words “Even if I die, may my motherland Sikkim live forever,”
will forever echo in our hearts.
On this occasion, let us all remember his immense contributions and pledge to follow his ideals in making Sikkim stronger, prosperous, and progressive.
Jai Sikkim
