Kuldeep Mahakul, an accomplished Indian para badminton player hailing from Odisha, shone brightly at the inaugural ABIA Para Badminton International 2025, hosted in Nigeria from October 6 to 11. Competing in the SL-4 classification for athletes with lower limb impairments, the 28-year-old secured a hard-fought bronze medal in the men's singles event after defeating opponents from South Africa and Nigeria in the group stage, only to narrowly miss the semifinals against a top-seeded Malaysian rival. Teaming up with fellow Odia para shuttler Biswas Ranjan Panda in the SU-5 men's doubles category—for players with short stature—Mahakul clinched another bronze, showcasing seamless coordination and tactical prowess in their semifinal loss to a dominant Indonesian pair. These triumphs contributed to Odisha's para badminton contingent's stellar haul of four gold, one silver, and two bronze medals overall, bolstering India's medal tally and highlighting the state's rising dominance in adaptive sports amid challenging humid conditions and fierce international competition.
