Were Kolkata's Left mayors really as successful as they are often portrayed?

(M)

In this video, we examine the record of three prominent Left-era mayors of Kolkata — Kamal Kumar Basu, Prasanta Chatterjee and Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya — and look beyond political nostalgia to examine their decisions, controversies and municipal record.

From Kamal Basu's tenure and the Satyanarayan Park controversy, to the butterfly-valve procurement controversy during Prasanta Chatterjee's tenure, and the hawker and Maidan controversies during Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya's tenure, this video looks at the documented record and asks a simple question:-

How much of the "good Left mayor" narrative stands up when we examine the record?

This is not a discussion of slogans or political nostalgia. It is an examination of Kolkata's municipal history, public policy, civic administration, infrastructure, expenditure and controversies.

The video also looks at the larger question of what Kolkata can learn from the city's previous administrations as the next municipal election approaches.

A recent remark attributed to CPI leader Swapan Banerjee about the Hanuman Chalisa has triggered a larger question: how does the Indian Left view Hindu religious faith and cultural traditions?

In this video, we examine the controversy surrounding the remark that “Hanuman Chalisa is read by Hanumans” and use it as a starting point for a much broader discussion about the relationship between Left-wing politics, Marxism and Hindu civilization.

The question is not simply about one statement or one CPI leader.

It is about a larger ideological contradiction:

Why is criticism of Hindu religious practices sometimes presented as progressive or secular, while similar scrutiny of other religious traditions can become politically sensitive?

In this episode, we examine:

• The Hanuman Chalisa controversy and the statement attributed to CPI leader Swapan Banerjee
• The Left’s historical relationship with Hindu religious institutions and traditions
• Marxism, religion and the concept of religion as ideology
• Why Hindu religious practices have frequently become subjects of political and ideological criticism
• The difference between legitimate criticism of religion and contempt for religious believers
• Whether the Indian Left’s approach to Hinduism is consistent with its broader ideas about secularism
• The tension between Marxist ideology and Hindu civilizational thought
• Whether Indian communism developed an understanding of India’s indigenous religious and cultural traditions—or largely approached them through imported European ideological frameworks

The larger question is therefore not merely “What did one CPI leader say?” but ..
Does the Indian Left have a problem with Hinduism—or is that perception based on a misunderstanding of its ideology and political history?

Watch the full discussion and decide for yourself.

The REAL Question That India Never Asked | Secularism Is Dangerous?

What does secularism actually mean—and does the European idea of secularism fit the civilizational framework of Bharat?

In this episode, we examine the “myth of secularism” and question some of the assumptions India has inherited about the relationship between religion, State, society and governance.

The discussion goes beyond the usual *BJP vs Congress* debate and explores a deeper question: *Why secularism?*

The episode examines:
________________________________________________________________
• The *European historical origins of secularism* and the relationship between Church and State
• How the concept of secularism was interpreted and applied in India
• The question of State control over Hindu temples and religious institutions
• Dharma, Raja Dharma and Hindu political thought
• Whether India's constitutional framework is necessarily in conflict with its civilizational identity, or whether later interpretations created that tension
• Macaulay, English education and the colonial transformation of Indian intellectual life
• The argument that political independence did not necessarily mean complete intellectual or civilizational decolonisation
• Why policy and education may matter more for long-term civilizational change than electoral politics alone
• The difference between Swaraj and Swatantra
• Why the debate should move beyond “who is more secular?” toward the deeper question: what kind of political and cultural framework is appropriate for Bharat?

This is an attempt to examine secularism, decolonisation, the Constitution and Hindu civilizational thought through a different lens—and to question assumptions that are often treated as settled.

Watch till the end and decide for yourself: Is secularism a universal principle, a European historical product, or something that requires a fundamentally different interpretation in the Indian context?

I Am Ram Lal” — Vote Chori? আসল রহস্যটা কী? | Election Controversy

In this video, we examine a controversial election and voter-list issue through the fictional character “Ram Lal” and ask an important question: Is there evidence of vote manipulation, or are these allegations being misunderstood or politically contested?

The phrase “Vote Chori” has become a major part of India’s political debate, particularly around allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls and the conduct of elections. Political parties and leaders have made competing claims, while the Election Commission has rejected allegations that it considers unsupported.

In this episode, we look at:
__________________________

Who is “Ram Lal”?
What does the fictional identity represent?
What exactly is meant by “Vote Chori”?
Voter-list irregularities and duplicate/incorrect entries
Allegations versus documented evidence
The role of the Election Commission of India
Electoral transparency and accountability
Can individual voter cases reveal a larger systemic problem?
What should voters actually verify?

This video does not present “vote chori” as an established fact. Instead, it examines the claims, counterclaims and available evidence and asks whether the concerns raised deserve further scrutiny.

Watch till the end and decide for yourself: Who is Ram Lal — and what does his story tell us about India's electoral system?

Was the Manusmriti always the text we know today? Or did centuries of copying, interpretation, redaction and colonial-era scholarship shape the version that became famous in modern India?

In this documentary, we go back to the Sanskrit manuscripts and modern critical scholarship to examine one of the most controversial texts in Indian history: the Mānava-Dharmaśāstra, commonly known as the Manusmriti.

Using the work of Sanskritist Patrick Olivelle and his critical edition published by Oxford University Press, we examine manuscript variants, textual transmission, redaction and the difficult question of how scholars reconstruct an earlier form of the text. Olivelle's critical edition compares manuscript evidence and documents significant variants, including additional verses found in different manuscripts.

We also examine the British colonial encounter with Dharmaśāstra, particularly the role of William Jones's 1794 English translation and the earlier judicial policies of Warren Hastings. Olivelle notes that Jones's translation had a practical colonial purpose connected with the administration of justice, rather than being purely an academic exercise.

But there's an important question:

Did the British actually create the controversial passages of Manusmriti?

The evidence is more complicated than that.

This video separates manuscript evidence, later redaction, pre-colonial interpretation and British colonial legal construction—rather than simply repeating either the traditional defence or the modern condemnation of the text.

In this video:
What exactly is the Mānava-Dharmaśāstra?
Who was "Manu"?
What does manuscript evidence tell us?
Were verses added or altered during transmission?
What is a critical edition and why does it matter?
Who was Kullūka Bhaṭṭa?
What did William Jones actually translate in 1794?
How did the British approach "Hindu law"?
Did colonial rule transform the status of Manusmriti?
Which controversial passages can actually be traced to the Sanskrit textual tradition?
What is history—and what is later interpretation?

The objective is not to defend or condemn Manusmriti, but to ask a more fundamental historical question:

When we quote "Manusmriti" today, are we necessarily talking about one fixed, unchanged text?

Primary scholarly reference: Patrick Olivelle, Manu's Code of Law: A Critical Edition and Translation of the Mānava-Dharmaśāstra, Oxford University Press.

SRFTI কি Anti-Hindu? | Satyajit Ray Institute-এ কী ঘটছে?

Is SRFTI becoming an Anti-Hindu Institute? What really happened inside Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute?

A major controversy erupted at SRFTI Kolkata after students objected to an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), an organisation described by multiple reports as RSS-affiliated. The confrontation escalated into clashes, injuries and a significant police deployment around the campus. Both sides have made allegations about how the violence began.

In this video, we examine the SRFTI controversy, the student protests, the ABGP event, the allegations made by both sides, and the larger question being raised:

Is there an ideological bias inside India’s premier film institutions — or is the “Anti-Hindu” label itself part of the political debate?

We look at the incident through the lens of Hinduism, campus politics, freedom of expression, student activism, ideological influence, institutional neutrality and political polarisation in West Bengal.

The Kolkata Police has registered three FIRs in connection with the violence.

This video separates documented events, allegations and political interpretations and asks the questions that deserve answers.

Dimagi Naxal’ Hote Gorbo? P. Chidambaram-ke Kora Proshno

P. Chidambaram recently said that he was “proud to be a dimagi Naxal” after Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the term during his Independence Day address. Chidambaram later reiterated his position and described “Dimagi Naxal” as a new version of earlier political labels such as “Urban Naxal.”(India Today)

In this video, I examine P. Chidambaram’s “Dimagi Naxal” remark, the context in which the phrase was used, and the larger political debate surrounding Naxalism, Maoist ideology, dissent and political labelling in India.

The discussion looks at:

🔴 What did PM Modi mean by “Dimagi Naxal”**?
🔴 Why did P. Chidambaram say he was “proud” of the label?
🔴 What is the difference between armed Naxalism and an alleged ideological/Maoist mindset?
🔴 Chidambaram’s argument that “Dimagi Naxal” is a new political label
🔴 The debate over Naxalism, Maoism and political dissent
🔴 Chidambaram’s record and statements on the Naxal issue
🔴 Where should legitimate political criticism be distinguished from support for extremist violence?

This video focuses on the public statements and political arguments surrounding the controversy. Descriptions such as “Dimagi Naxal” are presented as political terminology used by the speakers involved, rather than as an independent characterization of any individual.

Watch the full analysis and decide for yourself what the “Dimagi Naxal” debate actually means.

Fake Leftist? Neha Bora vs TPR | AISA’s Ideology Under Debate

CPI

Is today’s Left politics consistent with its own stated principles? In this intense debate with AISA National President Neha Bora, we discuss Left ideology, student politics, democracy, political accountability and the contradictions that critics often raise against Left organisations.

Neha Bora is the National President of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and has been publicly involved in student movements and debates surrounding education, examinations, political accountability and Left student politics. In recent interviews, Bora has discussed AISA’s role in student protests, opposition to the centralisation of examinations, the NTA, NEP 2020 and the broader role of Left politics in student movements.

In this conversation, we put some of the central claims and arguments of Left politics under scrutiny and ask: Based On Their Silence On The JNU Sexual Harrassmet Case hence Frighten

🔴 What does it actually mean to be a Leftist today?
🔴 Does Left student politics consistently uphold its stated democratic principles?
🔴 Where do ideology and political strategy intersect?
🔴 What does AISA stand for on education, protests and political accountability?
🔴 Can political movements be questioned without abandoning their ideological principles?

This is a political debate and analysis, not a claim that any individual is objectively a “fake Leftist.” The thumbnail and title use the question as a provocative framing for the discussion; viewers can judge the arguments, evidence and responses for themselves.

Watch the full debate and decide:
Are these genuine ideological differences—or contradictions within Left politics?
