Air India Express Caps Imphal–Guwahati Airfare at ₹6,000, to Add More Flights
Imphal, November 4, 2025:
In a welcome move for air travellers from Manipur, Air India Express has decided to cap the airfare for the Imphal–Guwahati sector at ₹6,000 and introduce two additional daily flights — one each to Guwahati and Kolkata.
The decision came after press reported on the rising airfares from Imphal and following a communication between Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).
A post from the official Raj Bhavan, Manipur page stated:
“Following the Governor of Manipur’s communication to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Air India Express has responded positively.”
Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India under the Tata Group, has reportedly already begun implementing the price cap. However, some discrepancies remain. When the press checked the airline’s website at 6:30 p.m. on November 4, the fare for November 7 was listed at ₹5,399, while the fare for November 19 stood at ₹6,799, causing confusion among travellers.
While Air India Express has taken the lead, other carriers such as IndiGo have yet to respond, and their fares remain significantly higher.
The announcement has triggered widespread reactions online. Many netizens welcomed the move as a “positive first step” but felt that ₹6,000 is still too high compared to airfares from other Northeastern capitals. For instance, the Agartala–Guwahati fare averages ₹1,900, while tickets from Aizawl and Itanagar remain below ₹3,000.
One social media user commented, “Putting a price cap is a good start, but people in Manipur are still paying much more than others in the Northeast.” Another wrote, “Bring it down to ₹3,000 — only then can it be called affordable.”
With highways blocked since May 2023, air travel remains Manipur’s primary means of connectivity. The Air India Express initiative, though partial, is seen as a crucial relief measure for passengers facing months of inflated fares.
Many now hope other airlines — especially IndiGo — will follow suit and introduce similar fare caps to ensure fair and affordable air travel for all.
