लाख मेले तरी चालतील,
पण लाखांचा पोशिंदा जगला पाहिजे।
Today is day of Bajiprabhu Deshpande. Exactly 361 years ago on the same date i.e 13th of July, the valiant warrior died.
The Maratha Kingdom had a lot of brave warriors who fought for their soverginty. No doubt that even Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj use to acknowledge that it was due to his brave Sardars that he was able to spread the 'Hindavi'(mind it no safforanisation 😉 ) Swarajya in the laps of Sahyadri.
One such Sardar was Bajiprabhu Deshpande who sacrificed his life for Chatrapati Maharaj. On 13th July, 1660 the heavy Adilshahi army lead by Siddhi Jauhar literally covered the mighty fort of Panhala from everywhere and Shivaji Maharaj was left with no choice but escape through a narrow pass known as Ghod (खिंड) to reach nearby fort of Vishalgadh.
Bajiprabhu told Maharaj to go but he insisted that he can't leave anyone like this to die to which Bajiprabhu said
Lakhs of soliders can die
But the utmost reason for them should be alive at any cost !!!
Bajiprabhu Deshpande with few Maval warriors told Raje to immediately escape to nearby fort of Vishalgadh and told him that as soon you reach the fort, fire five cannon balls so that he would know that Raje has reached safely.
In the midnight hours I.e. 13th July , 1660 Shivaji Raje escaped from Panhala to Vishalgad in the midst of heavy rains and here Bajiprabhu with few handful Mavals fought till he heard the sound of five cannon balls from Vishalgadh. Shiva Kashid disguised as Shivaji mahraj fooled Adilshahi army. Both Bajiprabhu and Shiva Kashid sacrificed there life for Raje in the mighty battle known as Battle of Pavankhind.
The mighyt kingdoms are constructed on the sacrifice of brave warriors. Such was Bajiprabhu Deshpande.
हर हर महादेव !!!
