The Megalithic Culture

A defining feature of the ancient history of the Khasi and Jaintia people is the sustained practice of Megalithism , which continues in ritual form even today . These practices offer insight into the socio - religious structure of the early inhabitants .
Purpose and Structure of Megaliths
Megalithic sites served multiple , integrated functions :
Ossuaries : Stones often mark the resting place of bones after secondary burial rites .
Memorials : They memorialized ancestors , particularly founding members of clans ( Iawbei ) .
Boundaries : Large stones served as markers for village or state ( Hima ) boundaries .

The primary megalithic structures are :
1. Menhirs ( Mawbynna ) : Tall , upright stones , usually representing the male ancestors ( U Shynrang ) .
2. Dolmens ( Kyllang ) : Flat , horizontal table stones supported by smaller stones, traditionally representing the female ancestor ( Ka lawbei ) .

Motphran monument was erected to commemorate the sacrifice of the Khasis during World War I. Located in Iewduh , Shillong’s largest market, it was built by the British and is an important tourist terminus in Meghalaya.

Translated, it literally means ‘Stone of France’. The British had originally named it ‘Mot France’ or the ‘Monument of France, but since the locals found it difficult to pronounce it, it came to be known as Motphran. It was dedicated to 67 porters of the 26th Khasi Labour Corps who had carried arms, ammunition and essential items for British soldiers serving in France, during the First World War, none of whom could return home, as they died during the war. The memorial engraved with a Latin inscription a translation of which reads ‘It is sweet to die for one’s country’ was meant to honour them in death.
