Dr Vishwamitra Batra: A Lifelong Commitment to the Tribal Communities of Meghalaya
Dr. Vishwamitra Batra for his relentless service in Meghalaya was recently recognized with the prestigious 11th Swami Vivekananda Smriti Karmayogi Award by My Home India. The award honors his 43 years of dedicated service especially to the Khasi tribal community of Meghalaya, highlighting his significant contributions to their healthcare, education, and cultural preservation.
Dr. Batra, a Delhi-born physician, has dedicated over four decades of his life to the service of the tribal communities in Meghalaya, particularly in the Khasi Hills. His journey of selfless commitment began when he joined Kalyan Ashram and was assigned to work in Meghalaya. Inspired by the call of service, Dr. Batra made the remote village of Laitkor his home, establishing a medical center to provide critical healthcare services to the local population.
Driven by a desire to integrate deeply into the community he served, Dr. Batra married a Khasi woman, further strengthening his connection with the region. His commitment to the well-being of the Khasi people extended beyond healthcare, as he also took on the mantle of preserving and promoting their cultural and linguistic heritage.
In addition to his medical contributions, Dr. Batra has been a champion of education. He has supported and funded several Seng Khasi schools, facilitating their establishment and providing essential resources. These schools play a pivotal role in safeguarding Khasi traditions and nurturing young minds with the values of their indigenous culture. He also contributed to running Seng Khynnah - Bal Sanskar Kendras and cultural centers, ensuring the holistic development of Khasis.
His work stands as a testament to his deep commitment to the Khasi people, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. Dr. Vishwamitra Batra’s story is one of compassion, service, and a profound dedication to the ideals of unity and cultural integrity.
