Members of the Khasi Students’ Union on Thursday put up banners across various parts of Shillong along the route of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighting several issues affecting Meghalaya.

Shah arrived in Shillong to attend a plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council at the State Convention Centre.

The banners displayed by the KSU carried demands and concerns relating to key issues affecting the state, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), reservation of employment opportunities for indigenous people at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, opposition to uranium mining, and the need for a lasting resolution and settlement of the Meghalaya-Assam border dispute.

The student body used the occasion of the Union Home Minister’s visit to draw attention to what it described as long-pending issues requiring intervention and support from the Centre.

Meanwhile, extensive security arrangements were put in place across Shillong ahead of Shah’s visit.
