The Meghalaya Government is taking a bold step to ensure safer travel across the state.
From now on, all commercial vehicles—including taxis and tourist cabs—must clearly display the driver’s name, license number, contact information, and address.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced that the initiative aims to deter crimes and build trust between drivers and passengers.
This move is especially important for women, solo travelers, and tourists, allowing them to note or share driver details quickly and feel more secure during their journey.
The new rule will apply only to vehicles operating under commercial permits.
Private, government, and state-run vehicles are excluded.
A one-month grace period will be given after official notification.
After that, any commercial vehicle not displaying driver details will be barred from operation.
This is just the beginning. The first phase covers four-wheelers, and two-wheelers may be included later.
With this new measure, Meghalaya joins the ranks of cities and regions worldwide that prioritize passenger safety.
Because every journey should be a safe one.
